Jess + Shane’s Post-Elopement Wedding Celebration Invitations

I love the idea of an elopement in a faraway destination followed by a big celebration with family and friends back at home! As Aussie expats living in NYC, that’s exactly what Jess and Shane chose to do! They turned to Becca at Suite Paperie for the invitations for their post-wedding celebration in Australia, using some of the photos from their quiet NYC elopement to share with family and friends.

From Becca: A little different from our usual wedding clients, Jess and Shane came to us with a unique request: as Aussies living together in NYC, they had already eloped here in the States and wanted to invite guests to a celebration of their marriage back home in Australia.

Jess brought us three stunning photos from the shoot they did after their elopement, wanting to incorporate them into the invitation suite so friends and family back home could catch a glimpse of their quiet wedding experience. We printed all three photos on a beautiful smooth soft white paper, allowing Jess and Shane to pick and choose which guests received which photo and adding a playful variety to the invitations.

We custom designed a simple map to highlight the party’s location, and the sweet invitation asked guest to “share in the long overdue celebration of their marriage.” We wrapped the whole stack with a velvet ribbon in a rich cognac shade and paired with a handmade paper liner that matched the hues of Shane’s suit and the map’s river.

Alana’s Otomi Foil + Acrylic Bridal Shower Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! We’re starting the week with these beautiful bridal shower invitations from Alana and Krystal at Vellum & Vogue – for Alana’s own bridal shower! Alana and Krystal chose a festive otomi pattern in a gorgeously subtle neutral color palette. The invitations even feature pearlized white foil printed on acrylic!

From Alana + Krystal: At Vellum & Vogue, we love incorporating unique printing methods and materials into our work. Alana’s bridal shower had a Mexican theme, so we wanted to create an invitation suite that incorporated a traditional otomi pattern but also had a modern sensibility.

We decided to foil stamp a pearlized otomi pattern on clear acrylic to give the invitation a soft, modern feel. We then foil stamped the event details in white for contrast. Alana loves neutrals, so our accent materials used a taupe and silver color palette. The invitation was accompanied by a taupe linen backer and finished with a frayed fabric and suede cord wrap.

Each invitation was mailed in a white box filled with white and silver shredded crinkle paper. We sealed each box with a taupe wraparound address label that used the same otomi pattern.

The Amaretto Sour

We’re back this week with another low-proof cocktail! This one’s based on a sweet liqueur, Italian Amaretto. Liqueurs can be a bit tricky to turn into cocktails by themselves, because their intense sweetness can turn the resulting drink into a cloying mess. But we cribbed a recipe from bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler that points towards a solution for this problem and opens up a world of low-proof possibilities. – Andrew

The Amaretto Sour

1 1/2 oz Amaretto
1/2 oz Bourbon
1 oz Lemon Juice
1 tsp Demerara Syrup
1/2 Egg White
2 dashes Aromatic Bitters

Lightly whisk the egg white, then add it and all your other ingredients to an empty cocktail shaker. Give it a quick shake without ice to froth up the egg white (otherwise known as a dry shake). Then add ice to the shaker and shake again (the wet shake). Strain into a chilled rocks glass or tumbler and garnish with citrus peel or a brandied cherry (or both!).

Amaretto is an almond-flavored Italian liqueur (we used Luxardo Amaretto) made with the pits of stone fruit – almonds, of course, but also apricots and bitter herbs. A traditional Amaretto Sour consists of just the sweet liqueur and lemon juice and is wildly, overwhelmingly sweet. This version cuts and fortifies the liqueur with a dash of bourbon (we used Four Roses Small Batch), helping the drink to taste like a real cocktail and not candy, but without adding too much extra alcohol with just half an ounce of full-proof spirits.

I’m on the fence about the Demerara syrup, a simple syrup made from equal parts water and raw or Turbinado sugar, because the drink is already plenty sweet, but it does help balance the bitters I’ve added to the recipe. We went with Havana & Hide bitters by 1821 Bitters, a deeply masculine and savory bitters made by one of my new favorite cocktail ingredient companies. It’s a nice way to add a contrasting complexity to an otherwise straightforward Sour. The egg white is, of course, optional. But it adds a velvety texture and dense foam on top of the drink that are worth trying.

Many low-proof cocktails are based on aromatic fortified wines, like vermouth or sherry (or both, as in the Adonis cocktail we featured last fall, or on bitter Italian amari liqueurs, like Campari. But this recipe shows that it’s not too hard at all to start with a sweet liqueur and temper its sweetness with the right layers of flavor.
