Understated and Elegant Cream and Gold Wedding Invitations

These elegant cream and gold wedding invitations by Megan of Ruby the Fox combine woodsy details with feminine glamour – all inspired by the wedding venue on the groom’s family farm in Maryland! A letterpress-printed woodgrain pattern, gold foil text, gold glitter envelope liners, and delicate calligraphy are just a few of the special touches in this invitation suite.

From Megan: When Kate, the bride-to-be, reached out to me to design custom wedding invitations and day-of paper accessories for her Baltimore wedding, I knew it would be a treat. I love working closely with couples on bespoke paper suites that truly reflect their personalities and the look and feel of their wedding day! Both the bride and groom are from Maryland, and they got married at the groom’s family farm.

Kate knew she wanted something feminine and elegant but felt strongly about bringing in a “woodsy” element to keep in mind in her fiancé’s interests. To combine those two looks, we went with a blind faux bois pattern printed on double-thick soft white cotton paper on the main invitation as well as a gold foil printed logo featuring antlers and the couple’s initials! The rest of the elements were printed on 110lb cotton paper with a combination of dove gray letterpress and gold foil. The result was super luxe and beautifully tactile.

Subtle touches of blush were incorporated through the outer and reply envelopes as well as a satin ribbon on the program. We also brought in custom spot hand calligraphy as well as gold hand calligraphy on the outer envelopes to keep everything super custom. Although the bride was very aware of involving her fiancé and his likes/dislikes, we couldn’t resist using a bit of sparkle (ahem, gold glitter envelope liners and backers for the menus!) to keep things glam. It was the perfect amount of sparkle! We carried the antler logo throughout the entire paper suite which made for a beautiful, cohesive look.

The final result was understated, feminine, and organic, which was the perfect combination for the couple’s upscale, chic farm wedding! This suite was so much fun to design and it ended up being one of my favorites from the season.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! And happy almost 4th of July! Are you traveling somewhere this weekend? We’re doing the opposite: we have grandparents coming to town this weekend! My girls are always SO excited when their grandparents come to town, it’s seriously like the night before Christmas. But before we all go running off for the weekend, I have a fun announcement for my stationer friends! These long summer days and nights have been making me so happy lately, spending weekends at the splash pad and hanging out in our backyard to watch the fireflies emerge every night. I want to help spread the summer glow with an advertising special! So starting today, I’m celebrating summer with 30% off all 3-month and 6-month sidebar ads booked in the month of July. And since a 6-month ad would take you through the holiday advertising rush, this is a great opportunity to get in early and save big! You can get in touch with us for ad rates and more info right here. But in the meantime…

Where to find Handmade Deckle Edge Paper

If I had to pick just one standout wedding invitation trend from 2017, it would easily be the return of beautiful and unique handmade paper with deckle edges. Handmade paper is all over my Instagram feed, and with good reason! Handmade deckle edge papers bring incredible depth to a wedding invitation suite, with gorgeous texture and those beautiful, soft feathery edges – and, since the paper is often custom made by hand, it can be made in all sorts of amazing custom colors. Handmade deckle edge paper is also gorgeous in day-of wedding stationery, like menus and seating cards. Today I thought I’d share a few resources for where to find handmade deckle edge paper for those of you who might be on the hunt!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with deckle edge paper, we’re talking about the thin, imperfect edges that result from traditional paper making techniques. During the paper making process, a deckle – or wood fence – is placed in the mould to keep the paper slurry within bounds and control the final size of the resulting paper sheet. During the paper making process, some of the paper slurry passes under the deckle and forms an irregular, thin feathered edge. You can also achieve a deckle edge look by hand tearing machine-made paper using a ruler (this invitation suite is a great example of hand-torn paper), and some handmade paper may also be hand-torn to achieve a specific paper size without a deckle. But for today’s purposes we’re focusing on handmade paper with a feathered edge resulting from a wood deckle.

Large Paper Orders

If you’re a stationer or calligrapher looking to carry deckle edge paper as one of your house paper stocks, I’m really only aware of two options for large quantity paper orders: the deckle edge paper stocks from Legion Paper (Arturo, Mediovalis, and Rives BFK among others) and Arpa from OrangeArt. I’ve seen the Arturo and Arpa papers in person and you really can’t go wrong with either option – I’m particularly smitten with the lavender and pale pink papers from each line. If you know of other wholesale deckle edge paper options, let me know in the comments and I’ll add them to the list!

Custom Handmade Papers

Oooh, this is where things get fun! There are tons of independent handmade paper making studios across the country, all making unbelievably beautiful handmade paper. Since these are small studios (often just one person), they produce extremely limited quantities and may require longer lead times to produce enough paper and/or envelopes for a full wedding invitation suite. But the results are SO worth it! Here are a few of the folks on my radar (in alphabetical order):

You can also find some pretty incredible handmade paper shops from around the world on Etsy – from traditional white and ecru paper to some very non-traditional color and material options. If you’re willing to spend a bit of time searching around, I recommend searching for “handmade paper” and “deckle edge paper” to get the best results. Here are a few of the more interesting shops that I found:

A couple quick tips for using handmade deckle edge paper in your wedding stationery:

Handmade papers vary widely in the materials used, texture, and color of each paper. If it’s your first time using a handmade paper or working with a particular paper maker, it’s probably a good idea to order some samples before placing a larger order.

Tell your stationer, printer, and/or calligrapher as soon as possible if you plan to incorporate handmade paper into your wedding stationery. You’ll want to be sure ahead of time that your favorite paper is compatible with your chosen printing method and invitation design. Writing on handmade paper can be very different from writing on machine-made paper, so your calligrapher will need to know well in advance so he or she can make any necessary adjustments in terms of equipment, paper quantities, or even just the amount of time needed to complete your stationery.

Those are my tips! Are any of you planning to use handmade paper in your wedding invitations?

Regal Navy and Gold Foil Calligraphy Wedding Invitations

Here’s a little something fancy to brighten your day: gorgeous and regal navy and gold foil calligraphy wedding invitations fromKara Anne Paper! Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the gold foil detailing on the back flap of the navy envelopes. The foliage pattern, complemented by the couple’s wedding crest, is elevated and over the top in all the best ways.

From Kara: This wedding invitation suite was designed for one of my best friends, Meg and her sweet husband, Brian. Creating their custom paper goods came easily to me! Knowing Meg and Brian’s personality and style I knew I wanted to design a classic, elegant invitation suite with a hint of some whimsical touches. To tie in Meg’s love for antique treasures from her grandparents, I incorporated gold foil accents and an intricately designed wedding monogram. After seeing the navy bridesmaids dresses chosen for their February wedding, I knew a deep navy envelope would make the perfect final touch to wow their guests. It created a gorgeous contrast from the bright white paper and the handwritten gold calligraphy that graced the envelopes.

The invitation design was 5.5″ x 8.5″ (A9) and foil printed on a thick Conservation Board paper. The details card was 4.5″ x 4.5″ and printed on the same paper using a dark navy letterpress ink. For an extra soft, romantic touch, a blush hand-made silk ribbon was used to tie the cards together so that they would stay stacked nicely inside of the envelope.

To tie the wedding program in with their invitation suite, I included navy lettering, custom hand painted watercolor florals and a charming illustration of the Chapel where Meg and Brian exchanged their vows. A soft, hand-made silk ribbon was also tied on the programs.

The custom designed details did not stop with the invitation suite. Throughout the ceremony and reception, there were several signs including; gorgeous navy and gold beverage and food signs, a welcome sign, direction sign and a little sign for the guests gifts from the bride and groom! To thank the groomsmen for being a part of their wedding celebration, we had custom Tervis Tumblers made with their wedding logo. This was of course a hit, along with the gold foil napkins and frosted beverage cups.

Vintage-Meets-Modern Floral Wedding Invitations

Charleston, South Carolina is an enchanting combination of classic Southern elegance and modern, swanky glam! Melissa of Atheneum Creative (and one of the talented members of our Designer Rolodex!) drew her inspiration from the wedding location to create these vintage-meets-modern floral wedding invitations. We’re loving the unique accordion fold layout (everything was mailed in a No. 10 envelope!), elegant gold foil text, and vintage-inspired floral illustrations of this stunning wedding invitation suite!

Vintage-Meets-Modern Floral Wedding Invitations by Atheneum Creative

From MelissaThe couple’s wedding style was a mix of modern and romantic, which played well with the wedding location of Charleston, South Carolina. The bride wanted something more floral and romantic while the groom wanted something that was a little more modern, so we decided to mix the two styles together in this completely custom design. We love the contrast between the vintage feel of the flowers with the more modern feel of the invitation card.

The couple decided to get married under a large oak tree and wanted the tree to play a presence in their wedding invitations. The tree was illustrated by the bride’s brother and printed in gold foil on the wedding invitation. The ceremony location at Middleton Place is a national historic landmark and home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens, so it felt right to bring in lots of flowers as the base of the invitation design.

The invitation itself is an accordion fold card that is foil printed and mounted to a digitally-printed backing sheet with the vintage-inspired illustrated flowers. The reply envelope was printed in gold foil and the entire suite was mailed in a number 10 envelope. The colors of the greens and coral flowers were all picked up from the location and the dresses of the bridesmaids. We simply loved how this suite came together!
