Chris + Emma’s Vintage Texas Cactus Wedding Invitations

Brace yourselves, because today’s real wedding invitations are truly spectacular.  Combining three of my favorite things — gorgeous calligraphy, letterpress printing, and vintage stamps — Emma + Chris’s southwestern cactus-inspired wedding invitations are a true representation of their upcoming Texas wedding.  So let’s get right to it!

From Emma: I am a designer living in Austin, Texas. I started designing wedding invitations about a year ago, when I took a job at a local invitation shop.  I draw my inspiration from nature, art, and all things vintage. (Update: Emma has since formed her own design studio called Antiquaria in partnership with calligrapher Bailey Amon)

Our wedding will be out doors in the hill country of Austin and I wanted an invitation that reflected the southwest without being overtly western.  I had the invitations letterpress printed at our awesome vendor Stationery Works using a warm gray ink.

Keeping all the letterpress printed pieces one color helped keep the overall cost down and I was able to add in pops of color with the bright yellow envelope liner and a reproduction vintage postcard (which I printed myself). All the pieces were then tied together in little bundles with yellow bakers twine from Whisker Graphics.

The outer envelopes brought it all together with calligraphy by Bailey Amon and vintage cactus postage that I found on ebay.

Thanks so much Emma!  You can find more of Emma’s design inspiration and influences, as well as more tidbits about her wedding, on her blog, Love of Folly, and more of her beautiful designs at Antiquaria.

Yellow Letterpress Graduation Announcements

In addition to flowers and wedding invitations, the arrival of spring usually reminds me of another fond memory – graduation!  I never did announcements for my own graduations, but after seeing these fun yellow announcements by Margaret of Nightingale Handmade, I wish I had!

Margaret, a budding letterpress printer, created these graduation announcements for her fiance, Luke, incorporating into the text an ongoing joke about how long it took for Luke to find the right school.  Margaret also used the project as an opportunity to play around with her new sewing machine and create a fun stitched border that complements the sunny yellow background and bold black text!

{happy weekend!}

Happy Friday everyone!  I'm looking forward to some family time this weekend, and to hopefully wrapping up a couple of projects I feel like I've been working on forever.  I'm not looking forward to all the rain we're supposed to be getting here on the East Coast this weekend, but I suppose that's to be expected this month (and I'm definitely glad that it's raining instead of snowing!).  But in the meantime…

Melissa + George’s Vibrant Folk Art Wedding Invitations

Melissa and George were married last October in San Antonio, Texas.  Melissa works as a graphic designer, so naturally she decided to take on the task of designing her own wedding invitations.  With her bold pattern selections and color palette, Melissa infused her invitations with a folk art-inspired feel, while still maintaining a traditional layout that suited her semi-formal wedding:

From Melissa: I loved the idea of a square format invitation and a full-bleed (no white border) design, but knew I needed to include a lot of information and wanted a more formal look-and-feel, since our church wedding and reception was more on the traditional side.

I sourced vector artwork from Shutterstock and colored and rearranged the pattern until I found one I liked. Our wedding colors were navy, cranberry and cream with a hint of turquoise, which I think was fully reflected in the final design.

We had more than half of our guests traveling from out of town, so I needed to include hotel and transportation information and a map of the area, along with our web site url and RSVP postcard.  The three stacked cards were designed to look like one cohesive image, but staggered to fit all the necessary details.  The diagonal pocket folder and envelopes were from Paper Source.

The invitations were digitally printed by Ginny’s Printing in Austin, Texas on 100# Classic Crest natural cover.  My mom, sisters, grandmother and bridesmaids helped assemble more than 200 invitations by affixing glue dots to the back of the navy blue card and attaching the cranberry belly bands.

My mom hand-addressed each envelope — and she also calligraphed the guests’ names on small square cards attached to the belly band around the invitation.  She’s a champ!

Melissa is now offering her wedding invitation design and several other designs as printable invitations in her etsy shop — check out the full selection right here!
