Paper Party 2013!

I’d normally wait until the end of my booth recaps to share these photos with you – but this time I just couldn’t wait!! For the past few years I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a party during the week of the National Stationery Show, and since I’m a tornado of activity down the aisles of the Javits Center during the show it’s really my only chance to hang out with many of my favorite stationers, calligraphers, retailers, printers, and fellow stationery enthusiasts! This year’s party was everything I could have hoped for and more!

Since we were at full capacity last year, we found a wonderful new venue with some room to spread around: Hudson Terrace (also just a few blocks north of the Javits Center!). The additional space also gave us some new opportunities when it came to the décor, so I enlisted the help of my friends Janice from Bellwether Events and Kelly from Studio DIY – this year’s party was definitely my favorite yet! We were also lucky to collaborate with some really amazing sponsors this year to make the whole party possible: MohawkMintedSmockLegion PaperChronicle BooksHello! LuckyTradeshow Bootcamp, and the Ladies of Letterpress!

We wanted to incorporate LOTS of color and geometric-inspired patterns into this year’s party. In addition to the invitations (which I’ll share soon!), we created several folded paper displays behind the bar using Britehue paper from Mohawk – one of my favorite details from the whole party! Stay tuned for a full tutorial!

This year’s party was so much fun! It was so great to see all my favorite paper people all in the same place and having the most wonderful time. I’m still grinning ear to ear just thinking about it! Once again, a huge thanks and much love to our amazing sponsors for making the whole thing possible: Mohawk, Minted, Smock, Legion Paper, Chronicle Books, Hello! LuckyTradeshow Bootcamp, and Ladies of Letterpress â€“ not to mention Hudson Terrace for having us, and to Fisk & Fern, Linda & Harriett, For Your Party, Soirée Floral, Meant to Be Calligraphy, Tattly, and Smilebooth for all being a huge part of the evening!

National Stationery Show 2013, Part 4

Today I thought I’d share a couple of big booths from the National Stationery Show that are packed full of awesome stationery: the Ladies of Letterpress and Crow & Canary booths! First up, the Ladies of Letterpress – which is really twelve independent stationers packed into one ginormous booth at the show. I totally forgot to take a wide shot of the full booth this year, but you can check out my 2011 recap for a better idea of the layout. Now on to the letterpress awesomeness!

DIY Tutorial: Neon + Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations

Neon is back in a big way. It’s been trending in fashion and home decor for a while now, so it’s fun to see the bright hues make a splash in the stationery world too! A while back, we shared a neon and kraft paper save the date design with you and today, we’re following up with a coordinating invitation suite! – Bailey and Emma of Antiquaria

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step One: To achieve the vibrant neon effect for this suite, we utilize the embossing technique. This process creates a raised and opaque print that emulates the thermography printing you’d find in a traditional print shop. Place your A7 card on a stable and firm surface. Ink your invitation stamp (we used our Mod Invitation stamp) and center the stamp over your card. When ready, press the stamp down with moderate pressure to make the print. Lift the stamp off and quickly move on to adding your embossing powder.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Once you’ve made your print, immediately cover it with embossing powder by sprinkling it across the paper. Shift the powder around until you have covered the entire image. Now, you will pour the excess powder off of the card onto a scrap piece of paper so that you can reuse it for future prints. Heat set the print, using an Embossing Heat Tool. You will be able to see the powder melt into an opaque and solid color when it’s done. For more information about how to emboss using stamps, please watch this instructional video.

Note: One key thing about embossing is that it is wise to try to closely match your ink color with your powder color. By doing this, you will get much more crisp and opaque results.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Two: Using the same technique as step one, you will print and emboss your reply card. We used our Mod Reply Card stamp on a 4Bar card for this piece.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Three: A really great way to add luxurious thickness and a pop of color to your invitation is to add a card stock backer to the invitation print. Adding a backer to the invitation also helps to flatten out any warping/curling that sometimes happens from the heat tool. To do this, simply cut the colored paper to your desired size (ours was 5.25″x7.25″) and use double sided tape to affix the two piece together. *We like to put tape all along the outer rim as well as an “X” across the middle to make sure that there is a good bond.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Four: By now, you all probably know that we love envelope liners! For this suite we used the same neon paper (except in text weight this time) to cut a liner for our kraft envelope. Simply trace the template on your paper, cut it out and use double sided tape or stick glue to affix it to your envelope.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Five: For a little added flavor, we stamped our Cross my Hearts Initial Monogram stamp in black ink on the inside flap of the liner. It’s a fun surprise for your guests when they first open your invitations!

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Six: For the reply card envelope, we kept things pretty simple and printed a matching address stamp (we used our Mod Banner Return Address Stamp) in black in on a 4bar kraft paper envelope. We also used the same monogram on the back flap that we used on the liner paper to carry the theme through the suite. We also used the same address stamp in black for the back flap of the A7.5 outer envelope, (not shown). For more detailed information on how to (properly) ink and print stamps, please watch this instructional video.

DIY Tutorial: Neon and Kraft Paper Wedding Invitations by Antiquaria via Oh So Beautiful Paper

Step Seven: Once you’ve crated all of your pieces, it’s time to address the invitations, add postage (we used vintage postage from Verde Studio) and send them on their way! We guarantee that your guests will be very impressed by all of your handiwork and pumped to celebrate with your on your big day!

Sabrina + Alex’s Modern and Graphic Wedding Invitations

These wedding invitations come to us all the way from France! Designer Lise Mailman of Ruban Collectif was inspired by the groom’s love of music and the bride’s love of bright colors and wanted to create something true to their personalities. Lise mixed graphic black and white with pops of bright color and neon. I love the chic modern style!

Modern Graphic and Neon Wedding Invitations by Lise Mailman of Ruben Collectif via Oh So Beautiful Paper (4)

From Lise: This is one of my latest custom wedding invitations that I made for a lovely French couple. He is passionate about music and has played bass guitar  in a rock n’ roll band since he was 16 years old. She loves Flamenco dancing and bright colors. I was inspired by the fact that they both love art (music and dance) and wanted to make them an invitation that reflects their personality.

I choose to go with a graphic poster style for the wedding invitations. They were delighted and super excited to have something more modern, with bright colors, different fonts, and graphic elements.

Friday Happy Hour: A Peach Margarita

With Cinco de Mayo coming up this weekend, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to share a wonderful cocktail that is meant to be enjoyed with company; in fact, the recipe below serves two people. We’ve already shared some great cocktails to mark this dramatic day in Mexican history, including a Strawberry Tequila Daisy, the mezcal-based Oaxacan Sunrise, and a classic Margarita. This twist on a classic cocktail is bursting with flavor (you won’t find poor quality tequila and boxed flavor mixes here!) and fresh ingredients: a Peach Margarita. – Andrew

Cocktail Recipe: Peach Margarita via Oh So Beautiful Paper (9)

Peach Margarita Cocktail Recipe Card by Caitlin Keegan for Oh So Beautiful Paper

Illustration by Caitlin Keegan for Oh So Beautiful Paper

Peach Margarita (serves two)

4 oz Tequila (we recommend anejo or reposado tequila, and always 100% agave)
2 oz Peach Liqueur
1 oz Lemon Juice
1 oz Lime Juice
1/4 oz Agave Syrup or Rich Simple Syrup
1 Peach, Peeled and Pitted*

Combine the tequila with the peach in a cocktail shaker, then muddle the peach well. Add the liqueur, juice, syrup, and plenty of ice, and shake well. Divide into two chilled cocktail glasses, straining out the pulp with a sieve or tea strainer, and enjoy with a friend.

Cocktail Recipe: Peach Margarita via Oh So Beautiful Paper (26)

There’s an enormously disturbing trend out there to use bottled mixes in cocktails. Tex-Mex restaurants have been guilty of this for a long time, making blended Margaritas with junky tequila (remember: always drink 100% agave!) and even junkier flavor mixes, made with sugar water and maybe some fruit juice. I’m seeing more and more like this at super markets – sour mixes, Mojito mixes, even a Bellini mix. To paraphrase Peggy Olson, these aren’t cocktails, they’re emergencies.

Cocktail Recipe: Peach Margarita via Oh So Beautiful Paper (4) Cocktail Recipe: Peach Margarita via Oh So Beautiful Paper (15)

So put that bottled sour mix down and try a real drink with real ingredients, real fruit, and you’ll never go back. This drink has plenty of classic Margarita flavor, from the tequila’s vegetal agave to the sweet and sour for the Margarita’s citrus, but the fresh peach really shines through. The real thing is so much better than the fake that I can’t figure out why anyone would every have anything else.

Cocktail Recipe: Peach Margarita via Oh So Beautiful Paper (8)

*The easiest way to peel a ripe peach is as follows: bring a pot of water to a boil. Cut a cross-hatch in the skin at the bottom of the peach, then submerge it in the boiling water for 40-60 seconds (or longer for less-than-ripe peaches). Remove the peach from the water with a slotted spoon, then submerge it in a bowl filled with ice water. After a minute or two, the skin should peel right off. (This trick works great for tomatoes too.) Run a knife through the middle of the peach and twist it apart, just like you would an avocado, then take out the pit. And there you go! A peeled, pitted peach.
