The 2016 National Stationery Show, Part 1

Finally!! There were more new exhibitors at this year’s show than I’ve ever seen at past shows, and many of them made VERY strong debuts. Let’s start there, shall we? At least a couple of these exhibitors will be familiar to OSBP readers, starting with Katie of The Good Twin! Katie has exhibited at shows in the past through Crow & Canary, but this was her first year exhibiting all on her own. So exciting! I absolutely loved everything in The Good Twin booth, including brand new screen printed cards, graphic pattern note cards, pencil sets, new enamel pins (pugs and kittens!), and a new bronze cast necklace collaboration with Kate Miss to complement the existing Zodiac enamel pin and postcard series!

Colorful Dip Dyed Baby Announcements

I’ll always have a soft spot for dip dyed stationery, especially when combined with beautiful calligraphy and mint green edge painting! Brittany from Swell Press Paper Co. created these sweet dip dyed baby announcements – with a two color dip dye! And how cute are those mini mint green envelopes with little newborn baby photos???

From Brittany: When Bradley reached out to me to create a fun, one of a kind letterpress birth announcement for her new baby girl Frances Walker, I immediately knew this project was going to be a blast. Bradley wasn’t scared of color, and let me run wild with whatever design idea I had. I was so excited to be able to combine my two favorite techniques – dip dying (in two colors!) and edge painting – all topped off with the beautiful calligraphy of Melissa from Olive Branch & Co.

Crane’s super thick 220lb Lettra Cotton Paper in Pearl White perfectly absorbed the dip dye and allowed for a beautiful, deep impression of the text. I chose a light periwinkle ink color to match the envelopes; the spring colors were perfect to welcome the new babe into the world!

New mom Bradley also is a fan of anything miniature (I mean who isn’t?), so I included a mini mint green envelope (with matching edge paint color!) and three tiny photos of Walker (and her adorable chubby legs). This is by far one of my favorite projects to date!

Tropical Garden Party Copper Foil Wedding Invitations

Tropical foliage + copper foil? A match made in heaven! I’m pretty sure my jaw hit the floor when I saw these gorgeous tropical garden party copper foil wedding invitations from Haley at Australian creative studio The Distillery. Haley created these invitations for a wedding at the Merribee Estate a couple of hours south of Sydney, Australia. I love the dark green envelope liner against the colorful digitally printed tropical florals and copper foil details!

From Haley: As Mel and Nathan were planning their wedding, they knew they wanted a romantic, whimsical and slightly quirky adventure out of the city they call home. Inspired by the sense of freedom, they ventured south of Sydney, where they fell in love with the enchanting gardens of Merribee Estate. Immediately they knew that the surrounding ornamental topiary and tropical gardens, would shape their entire stationery suite and set the tone for a slightly unconventional wedding.

With a passion for craft and tactility, Mel and Nathan wanted to to explore speciality embellishments to inspire their guests with a sense of freedom, fun and adventure that also draws on the weddings slightly Alice in Wonderland theme. The invitation features flowering trees, and pretty topiary in a variety of whimsical shapes and colours combined with the subtle glimmer of foil sprinkled within the digital florals to silently accentuate the couples names.

Mel and Nathan’s names have been hand lettered with a copper foil embellishment to mimic the rustic elegance of Merribee’s historical barn. The ever so slightly quirky and playful nature of the evening was also brought into the details of the typography that has been letterpress printed into a creamy cotton stock and mounted to a deep forest green.

These qualities have been further explored in the additional stationery pieces, including a hand illustrated map that combines both letterpress printing processes with new age digital printing. The map unfolds to reveal a playful Alice in Wonderland inspired journey filled with tea cups and playing cards to highlight key details for their guest’s adventure to Merribee gardens.

The RSVP card is a petite, play on verbs and adjectives that inspires their guests to create loving memories for the bride and groom. The stationery suite is completed with a beautiful modern calligraphy style that addresses their guests envelopes.
