DC Guide: Fun Winter Activities

DC’s tourist season is decidedly in the spring and early summer, when millions of visitors come to see the cherry blossoms (which bloom late March to early April), the national monuments, and other DC attractions. A couple of years ago, I shared some things to do in DC that are not on the National Mall, and I’ve continued to share some of our favorite DC spots ever since. Winter in DC tends to be fairly quiet, which makes it a wonderful time to visit! So today I thought I’d share a few fun winter activities in DC.

The U.S. Botanic Garden is one of my most favorite DC destinations in the winter. It may be winter outside, but it’s always summer inside the garden conservatory! The citrus trees and orchids are both blooming, there are poinsettias everywhere (including pretty pale pink and white varieties), and if you happen to visit the gardens around closing time you’ll have a rare opportunity to see the gardens at night – all dressed up with special holiday season lighting. From Thanksgiving to January 5, the Botanic Garden hosts a wonderful seasonal exhibition with a special train exhibit and models of DC historical landmarks constructed entirely from natural materials.

Zoolights at the National Zoo

Okay, so the National Zoo is at the top of our DC list any time of year, but from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day the Zoo gets all dressed up to celebrate the holidays. More than 500,000 LED lights transform the Zoo into a winter wonderland with animal silhouettes, musical light displays, and a garden light sculpture. Visitors can take a train tour through the zoo, ride a solar-powered carousel, and visit some of the indoor animal exhibits like the small mammal house and reptile discovery center. It’s fun for adults, but also really super fun if you happen to be traveling with kids. And the best part: admission is free!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen us playing tourist in DC during our holiday break. While the museums aren’t completely empty, winter is a wonderful time to visit some of DC’s more popular museum destinations. We’re particularly fond of the Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History, which are both great for kids, and both wings of the National Gallery of Art. And like all Smithsonian Institution museums, including the Zoo, the admission is free!

Go to a Caps Game

You may be surprised to learn that I’m a pretty big hockey fan! It hasn’t always been the case (I grew up in Florida, where hockey wasn’t really at the top of the sports hierarchy), but after living in DC for more than 10 years I’m totally on board. All it took was a well-timed HBO series and friends to explain the rules. Maggie and Trevor took us to our first Capitals game, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Tickets can be pricey, but games at the Verizon Center in DC’s Chinatown neighborhood are SO much fun!

Outdoor Ice Skating

The DC area has several outdoor ice skating rinks, but my two favorites are the rinks at the National Sculpture Garden on the National Mall and Canal Park in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Southeast DC. The Sculpture Garden rink is adjacent to the National Gallery of Art, and a few Caps players have been known to stop by from time to time. Since it’s on the National Mall, the Sculpture Garden can get a wee bit crowded – especially on weekends. The ice skating rink at Canal Park is less touristy and can be a more relaxing way to spend an afternoon – and you can step into Park Tavern for a warm meal when you’re done!

Phoebe’s Floral and Gold Foil Birth Announcements

Erin of BerinMade and her husband recently welcomed their first child – a darling baby girl named Phoebe Rose! Erin designed a floral birth announcement inspired by Phoebe’s middle name, and featuring Phoebe’s darling silhouette! Ah, baby silhouettes. There is nothing sweeter! Erin also hand lettered Phoebe’s name, which was stamped in gold foil over the digitally printed floral background. Such a beautiful combination!

From Erin: My husband and I were started thinking about these birth announcements before Phoebe was born because we were so excited! The suite is inspired by her name, Phoebe Rose. Phoebe’s name means a “bright, shining light” and we really wanted concept to stand out on the announcement. We knew we wanted gold foil for her name. I incorporated my hand-painted roses as the floral background of the card and hand-lettered her name. The card was then digitally printed on watercolour textured stock, then gold foil was pressed on top.

A silhouette of her face was traced from the very last scan we did prior to giving birth! And because we had received so many presents and well-wishes by that point, we also had matching notecards printed with the rose motif. On the back, we printed a verse which reads “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.”

Brittany + Aleksandr’s Southwestern Desert Cactus Wedding Invitations

Our final set of wedding invitations today is a modern spin on southwestern inspiration from Anastasia Marie. Anastasia incorporated traditional motifs like cactus silhouettes and fringe in a beautiful peach and turquoise color palette. Sweet, simple, and so lovely!

From Anastasia: This couple had a southwestern theme for their wedding with peach and turquoise blue as their colors. We kept the invitation itself in soft peach hues and then added the turquoise punch with the envelopes. Printed on smooth white cover paper, these invitations conveyed southwestern all over with the touches of fringe, cactus motifs, and choice of fonts.

Rebecca + Andrew’s Whimsical Illustrated Wedding Invitations

I’m loving the subtle botanical patterns and illustrated motifs in these invitations from Jessica of Moira Design Studio! Jessica mixed calligraphed text with watercolor patterns and illustrations inspired by the farmhouse wedding venue, matching different vignettes to each part of the invitation. So beautiful!

From Jessica: Rebecca and Andrew’s wedding venue features a lovely little orchard, a pretty old barn, a farmhouse, and a small vineyard. We loved the idea of combining all those gorgeous elements, but fitting them all on one invitation proved to be difficult. We ended up mixing the grape vines and peach branches together to make several patterns, featured the barn on the invitation, and then created a little vignette for the envelope liner that combined all the elements in a little landscape and included portrait silhouettes in little  painted frames.

We love mixed media and this particular suite features watercolor and calligraphy. We also print the backs of all our pieces, giving everything that extra added detail. It’s also a great way to include more elements! The back of all the pieces are different, ranging from peach trees, branches covered in peaches, grape leaves, vines, and the matching vignette on the back of the invitation.

Naturally, all the envelopes are addressed in matching calligraphy.

Lauren + Paul’s Rustic Screen Printed Fabric Wedding Invitations

There is something so romantic in these screen printed fabric invitations from designer Jessi Evans. Inspired by the natural beauty of the wedding venue, the invitation features a single color screen print on muslin fabric and fold-out enclosure, complete with farm-inspired illustrations. Sweet, simple, and ridiculously beautiful.

From Jessi: These screen printed fabric invitations were inspired by the natural beauty of the Pennsylvania farmland. I wanted to capture the raw essence of the wedding venue, while celebrating the simplicity of the countryside.

The materials include a screen printed muslin invitation partnered with a three panel foldout that includes a detachable RSVP postcard printed on recycled, post-consumer paper stock in a milkweed color.

My favorite details include an illustration of the barn in which Lauren and Paul will be wed, their favorite song lyric, a wheat pattern and silhouettes of iconic farm animals.
