Stationery A – Z: Snarky Birthday Cards

I love that moment when you’re skimming through greeting cards and you come across one that causes you to chortle to yourself. You smile a little and realize that this snarky/sarcastic birthday card is perfect for someone you know. Someone that has a sense of humor and likes nothing more than to laugh a little (at themselves) on their birthday. Here is a roundup of smart cards that falls into that category. — Tashia

Calligraphy + Laser Cut Menus from Neither Snow

The calligraphy by Mara of Neither Snow is always so, so beautiful – and these menus are no exception. Mara collaborated with Amber from Pitbulls and Posies for a welcome dinner at a Jose Villa workshop in Mexico. Amber combined Mara’s lettering with a beautiful floral laser cut border for added texture and dimension. Love!

From Mara: I worked on this menu last year with the ever talented Amber Moon of Pitbulls and Posies and Jill LaFleur for a workshop by Jose Villa in Mexico. The menus welcomed conference attendees on the first night. Jill put together a jaw-dropping inspiration board that evoked a festive, relaxed hacienda dinner party under the stars.

Amber integrated my scanned calligraphy and printed it using an inkjet machine for vibrant color and the ever elusive white “ink” (the white is the negative, not-printed space). The final touch was to take this laser-cut paper  with the inside removed and used as a border. I then penned the names of the attendees. A fun combination of DIY, problem-solving, repurposing existing laser-cut products, calligraphy, and personalization.

Airship: A Letterpress Graphic Novel

As a visual person, I love graphic novels – and I’m always so impressed with the creative stories told through this format. My mind was almost completely blown when Todd from Angel Bomb Design sent over his letterpress printed graphic novel, called The Airship. As you’ll see below, The Airship was inspired by the mixture of digital and analog technology and is just the first installment in a planned 3-book series. So cool!

From Todd: In the fall of 2011, I was selected as a Book Arts Fellow by the Jerome Foundation and provided support to create an enhanced, letterpress graphic novel. The writing, illustration, design, and letterpress printing on an 80 year old Vandercook press are all done by me. The Airship came about in an effort to create a book that bridges the gap between digital media and good ol’ analog books. By creating a story that utilizes a communication gap created by technology, I hope to entice readers into seeing new possibilities for tying two disparate mediums together for a more interactive and unique experience.

The Airship is first in a trilogy of letterpress graphic novels where one of the characters is transported to another time and space by a newly developed machine. He tries to send messages back home, but his communication is garbled in the aether and it’s only with a smartphone that the reader is able to scan QR codes and decipher the messages.

This idea stemmed from the different technologies used by me for my daily work: I design on a high tech Mac and print on low tech analog equipment varying in age from 60 to 123 years old. I strove to create a book that created an analogy to the production process that would include the reader and give them a more unique reading experience.

Dana + Matt’s Rustic Floral Wood Veneer Wedding Invitaions

I love the combination of romantic floral illustrations and rustic wood veneer in these wedding invitations from Dana at Birds of a Feather on Australia’s Gold Coast. Dana was inspired by the natural beauty of the wedding venue, incorporating a letterpress printed floral motif with kraft paper envelopes and vintage botanical envelope liners. Just lovely!

From Dana: We were married last month on a beautiful country property on Mount Tamborine, Queensland, Australia. We wanted our invitations to reflect the rustic beauty of the venue. Using simple and natural elements we created this stunning country garden theme invitation suite.

The main invitation features beautiful calligraphy and our very own hand-drawn floral design, all letterpress printed in black on wood veneer. The additional cards were also letterpress printed on 100% Cotton Lettra Paper. The information and direction cards were slipped behind the invitation and tied with natural twine.

We finished them off by adding the individual guest name tags. I think our most favourite part of this whole invitation suite are the envelope liners! They are just so pretty!
