The act of becoming engaged is a celebration in itself, followed quickly by a string of excited phone calls and bubbly toasts. If you have friends or family that have recently become engaged, we’ve pulled together a few clever and sweet cards – each one is a great way to send congratulations, especially if you’re not close enough to see the glint and glistening in person. — Tashia

Sierra + Brendan’s Hand-Lettered Wedding Invitations

Wedding invitations should always reflect the style and tone of the wedding itself, whether a formal black tie affair or an intimate casual gathering. Sierra and Brendan wanted to avoid any impression of stuffiness in their wedding invitations, so they worked with artist Jesse Wells to create a sweet illustrated design. The invitation suite even features a keepsake print for their guests!

From Sierra: We wanted the centerpiece of the invitation to be a limited edition letterpress print as a wedding keepsake for our guests. Jesse Wells designed both the print and invitations. A tent in our backyard that we’d lit with a hanging light fixture inspired her design. My husband and I are both writers and avid readers, so she depicted us reading together.

The invitation itself and the RSVP card borrowed visual elements from the print. We also wanted to keep the invitation design simple. Our wedding was held in a friend’s garden, so we wanted the invitations to have a handmade look, but also look clean. Jesse Wells provided the hand lettering and printed the invitations at the Virginia Art of the Book Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. Green was our wedding color, so you’ll notice she used a couple different green inks. I helped cut the paper afterward.

Kelsey’s Modern Hand-Lettered Black + White Business Collateral

I love business cards in all shapes, colors, and sizes, but sometimes you just can’t go wrong with classic black and white. Freelance designer Kelsey of Pinegate Road Designs sent over the materials that she designed after rebranding her blog and personal identity, and I’m loving the crisp design and hand lettered elements. But my favorite part? The little space for notes on the back of the business card – total genius!

From Kelsey: I’m currently working towards my MFA in graphic design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. I freelance on the side under the name Pinegate Road Designs and have a soft spot for hand lettering and photography. I recently rebranded my blog and personal identity, and I wanted my stationery to go along with the new brand system.

Lately I’ve been inspired by natural elements, my hand-lettering practice, as well as a clean and modern sensibility. My stationery includes a hand lettered postcard sealed in a vellum envelope with a custom sticker, as well as new business cards that I designed myself and were letterpress printed at Cotton Paperie.

Parker’s Little Fisherman Birth Announcements

I love it when familiar couples return with new projects to mark new momentous occasions. Designer Lauren Chism created these beautiful moving announcements to help her close friends celebrate the purchase of their first home, and today she’s sharing the birth announcements for their first child! Little Parker was born just after Thanksgiving, and Lauren was inspired by the proud papa’s favorite hobby to create a subtle theme for his announcements.

From Lauren: Parker is the adorable son of my very best friend of 11+ years, Carrie and her husband Jim. Our husbands have bonded over their love of fishing, so when we found out they were having a boy, I knew that a ‘little fisherman’ theme would be perfect for his announcement.

Using the great printers at Czar Press, I decided to spare my adhesive gun and had the photo, as well as a subtle light grey ‘fish’ pattern, digitally printed on Crane’s Lettra card stock. I then had the rest of the playful text of his name and baby statistics letterpress printed in olive green. We paired them with kraft envelopes, which provided the perfect touch to these little fisherman announcements.

A funny little story: when Jim texted us that Parker had been born, he sent a photo and his weight. Without seeing the photo, my husband assumed he had been fishing and had caught a 7 pound fish and responded ‘NICE!’  A few minutes later, when he saw the photo, he realized his 7 pound fish was really a baby and proper congratulations were sent. I love that story and it makes these announcements even more fitting. Parker will definitely be joining his dad on the water when he is older.

Katie + Bryan’s “Tie a String” Letterpress Save the Dates

We all know the old adage – tie a string around your finger to remember – so what could be better inspiration for a wedding save the date! The team of sisters behind Hartford Prints! created these illustrated save the dates for a wedding this summer. The design even features the bride and groom’s pup, Mason!

From Callie: We were so excited to design a save the date card for Katie and Bryan, a fun-loving couple who also happen to be our cousins. As only family can, they contacted us with very specific ideas about the composition, the palette, and the presence of their adorable dog, Mason. Katie is a very talented artist, so she made our job easy by being imaginative, creative, and detailed in her ideas. After several rounds of design edits, we finally decided on a palette of dark cyan, turquoise, and blood orange, using the “tie a string around your finger” proverb to remind guests to save the date!

Katie and Bryan wanted a unique, playful design that hinted at the fun, down-to-earth style of their wedding. Older sister Addy (our artist in residence) created a vertical composition, illustrating the string and lettering by hand. The elongated, vertical text on the top and bottom of the card really grounds the sweeping horizontals of the string lettering, creating a beautiful and balanced design.

Additionally, we love when we’re able to incorporate our clients’ own artwork so we were very excited when Addy also chose to include a pointed finger and hand that Katie had drawn in one of her sketches to us!  The cards were printed on our 300 gsm electric white stock and paired with a bright orange envelope for a playful and colorful pop.
