Happy Weekend + Sophie at 11 months

Happy Friday everyone! Earlier this week Sophie turned 11 months old – I can’t believe her first birthday is in less than a month! This first year has flown by so incredibly fast, and this past month in particular has been a complete whirlwind. Sophie has turned into a champion speed crawler, so of course she’s into absolutely everything. This week she’s working on standing up, pulling herself up against the couches, coffee table, dining chairs – anything she can reach. It’s simultaneously exhausting to chase her around the house all day but also really fun to watch her make so many new discoveries. This weekend we head up to New York for the NYNOW trade show (formerly NYIGF) – we’re excited to have a few days in the city again! I’ll report back next week with my favorite finds from NYNOW (and you can follow me around during the show via Instagram), but in the meantime…

Natasha’s Travel-Inspired Virginia Moving Announcements

My friend Natasha and her family recently relocated from Hong Kong to Charlottesville, Virginia. When she sent over her moving announcements I was seriously impressed by how cute they are… and a little ashamed that I haven’t gotten my act together enough to send out my own moving announcements five months after moving. Sigh. Natasha worked with Hailey from Snow and Ivy to create these fun Virginia-inspired announcements, with an adorable photo of their son Francis on the reverse side. So sweet!

Leah + Jeremy’s Modern Chevron Stripe Wedding Invitations

These modern invitations from Julie at Ten Four Paper are so fun! Julie mixed bright color with bold chevron stripes and lots of pretty typography. I’m particularly in love with the unexpected color palette of lavender and orangey-red – such a great combination!

From Julie: Leah and Jeremy are a fun couple who knew each other in high school and began dating in college at Ohio State University. Leah’s chosen color scheme included shades of purple and bright pops of orange and red-orange, and she wanted a typography-oriented aesthetic for her paper goods with fun patterns and details. They both wanted friends and family to be excited to come to the May wedding, while feeling comfortable and laid back.

Leah asked me to create a fun, modern and somewhat playful design for the save the date that incorporated the story of how they met. After the initial save the date design was completed, the rest of the invitation pieces and stationery followed suit. All of Leah and Jeremy’s materials were flat printed on pearlescent paper; a budget-friendly option for a couple that wanted fun paper goods without breaking the bank.

We chose a fun handmade lace paper wrap in lavender to hold all of the cards together in the envelope. The same lavender was used as the outer mailing envelope, with a bright orange chevron liner as a fun surprise. Little elements of arrows, banners and icons accompanied the fun typographic designs of the invitation and additional cards. We used matching wrap around labels for the addresses.

The day-of paper goods continued in the fun, modern style of the invitation suite. The program included ceremony information as well as a breakdown of the wedding party.

Guests had place cards with little icons of their food choice set atop tables numbered by years in Leah and Jeremy’s relationship. Favor cards were framed on each table noting a donation to charity in honor of Leah’s friend. Everything in the suite was completed with matching thank you notes!

Equestrian Wedding Invitation + Calligraphy Inspiration

I have some more inspiration to share with you today – this time in the form of beautiful equestrian-inspired wedding invitations and calligraphy from Kara Anne Paper & Lettering! Kara collaborated with the ladies of Southern Posies to create pretty paper goodies inspired by the Kentucky Derby, from invitations to escort cards and menus. I love the use of copper calligraphy throughout the suite, so gorgeous!

From Kara: This Kentucky Derby-inspired wedding paper was so much fun to design! Having a love for horses since I was a little girl, I knew right away I would enjoy every second of this equestrian inspiration shoot, which took place at the beautiful Stables at Russell Crossroads in Alexander City, Alabama.

When Crystal Strickland with Southern Posies described her vision for the florals and overall design theme I knew I wanted to create illustrated elements with a horse theme and a rustic chic feel. I designed a casual invitation suite on an eco-friendly cream color paper with a mix of copper calligraphy and block lettering for the envelopes.

The thank you card with the couple’s last initial was inspired by the shape of a horseshoe and the bold yellow roses used in the bridal bouquet.

The menus were inspired by race flags, printed on a textured eco-friendly paper and completed with a copper satin ribbon.

The entry table included horse stamped muslin bags with blackberries (Kentucky’s state fruit), little whiskey favors for the men, and green apples for the horses. The welcome sign is copper calligraphy on a brown paper.

Backyard Cocktail Party Recipes

For the first time since moving to DC, Nole and I have a backyard – and you can believe we’re doing our best to take advantage of it this summer. This means grilling, and outdoor parties, eating under the stars… and cocktails! Here are some St-Germain cocktails we’ve whipped up (along with our very first mocktail) for just such a party, perfect for making in big batches for your guests, but still light enough to enjoy next to the grill without leaving you too lightheaded in the heat.

St-Germain Sangria

One Bottle Dry White Wine
3 oz St-Germain
3 oz Pisco Brandy
2 oz Lemon Juice
2 oz Honey Syrup
Berries and Grapes

Combine the wine, St-Germain, Pisco, lemon juice, honey syrup (equal parts honey and water heated until the honey melts), and chopped berries and grapes in a pitcher. Let everything sit for a few hours or overnight to let the flavors meld. Pour over lots of ice and enjoy!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sangria is ridiculously easy to make and so delicious that I’ll never understand why I don’t make it more often. This St-Germain Sangria is no exception. St-Germain’s floral notes and sweetness make it a great complement for a white wine-based Sangria. It’s light and sweet, with just a bit of edge from the oakiness of the wine and funkiness of the Pisco. It only comes in party-friendly pitchers. Oh, and – despite being made from white wine – it turns a great pink color from all that fruit that will probably delight some guests at your party.

St-Germain Shandy

2 oz St-Germain
2 oz Lemon Juice
Wheat Beer

Combine the St Germain and lemon juice in a glass filled with ice. Top with the wheat beer (we used my personal favorite, Bavaria’s Paulaner Hefeweissbier, but any other wheat beer or even a lager or a pilsner would work too), give everything a good stir, and enjoy!

Recipe Card: St-Germain Shandy, Illustration by Dinara Mirtalipova for Oh So Beautiful Paper

Traditionally, a shandy is equal parts beer and a soft drink; the Germans are fond of a shandy that matches beer with sparkling lemon soda. Our shandy is a play on this classic, combining the wheat beer’s delicate notes of fruit and spice and citrus with a punch of lemony sourness, balanced by the St-Germain’s sweet fruitiness. It’s a substantial but still light, enormously refreshing, and easy to make in big batches or one at a time.

Blueberry Mint Shrub Soda

2 oz Blueberry Mint Shrub Syrup*
Soda Water

To make the shrub syrup, combine one cup of muddled blueberries, one cup of sugar, and one cup of raspberry vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 days, agitating occasionally. (Alternatively, for a much faster process, combine everything in a sauce pan and heat gently, stirring frequently, for 20-30 minutes.) Strain the mixture well through a fine sieve or strainer to filter out the solids.

Take a handful of mint, add a few ounces of the syrup, and muddle gently, pressing but not shredding the leaves. Remove the leaves, squeezing out as much of the syrup and mint oils as possible. Add the minty syrup back to the rest of the shrub. To serve, combine the shrub syrup with the soda water over lots of ice and enjoy!

This is our very first mocktail, and it’s a good one – full of fresh fruit and mint flavor, sweet but with a kick from the vinegar, and enormously refreshing thanks to all that soda water and ice. Shrubs like this one can just as easily be made into a cocktail or a soda like this one. It’s easy to make in a big pitcher and handy to have around for both your non-drinking guests or to sip in between other drinks (you know, to stay hydrated).
