Happy Monday!

Happy Monday everyone! Normally I do these link round ups on Fridays, but we had an assembly at my girls’ school and the day got away from me. So I thought I’d save it for Monday instead! Did you have a good weekend? We got our first little snowfall on Saturday afternoon, and my girls were in HEAVEN. There’s a chance we might get a bit more later this week – fingers crossed! But in the meantime…

Sweet and Simple Calligraphy Baby Announcements

Alright, prepare yourself for some seriously sweet baby announcements! We’re loving the combination of a colorful patterned envelope liner and a unique paper size from Alana of Bourne Paper Co.’s â€“ she made these sweet and simple calligraphy baby announcements for her daughter Peyton! This is truly a gorgeous welcome into the world, with custom calligraphy from Anne Robin and a patterned envelope liner inspired by textiles in Peyton’s nursery.

From Alana: To celebrate the birth of our daughter, Peyton, I wanted to design a birth announcement that was simple and sweet with some subtle sentimental touches. Peyton’s nursery is decorated in a color palette of bright pinks and soft blues including several Hmong and mudcloth patterned pillows. I decided I wanted her birth announcement to be a complement to her nursery – modern and clean but with some bright and colorful accents.

The announcement card focused on one of our favorite newborn photos of Peyton taken by The DeJaureguis photography team. I also incorporated hand lettering by Anne Robin. The DeJaureguis team photographed our wedding and Anne did the calligraphy for our save the dates and wedding invitations. Getting to incorporate both of their work into our daughter’s birth announcement felt like a very special and personal touch.

The announcement text was letterpress printed in black ink (as you can tell from our save the dates, I’m a sucker for classic black and white letterpress). I used Crane Lettra in Fluorescent White. I love the textural feel and the way it makes the impression of letterpress stand out.

To add a pop of color, I created a bright blue and pink envelope liner featuring a Hmong-inspired pattern. I also incorporated a hint of the pattern into the address labels. The announcement was finished with a light kraft envelope, a nod to the weathered oak wood of her nursery furniture.

On a personal note, when I was born my paternal grandmother (a talented painter and calligrapher) created my birth announcements. Both of my grandmothers were creative spirits who fostered that same sense of creativity in me. Getting to create my daughter’s birth announcements felt like a fitting tribute to these two wonderful women. I look forward to sharing their stories with my daughter one day.

Southwestern Mixed Media Wedding Invitations

You guys, today is going to be a GREAT day: we have an invitation from Arley-Rose and Morgan of Ladyfingers Letterpress to share with you! If you’ve been reading OSBP for the last five or so years, you know that these ladies produce some of the most imaginative and beautiful custom stationery (including my first daughter’s baby announcement!). These stunning southwestern mixed media wedding invitations are no exception. Arley and Morgan incorporated non-traditional materials like mica, leather, sage, and wood to create a complete invitation experience. Amazing!

Southwestern Mixed Media Wedding Invitations by Ladyfingers Letterpress

From Arley-RoseIt’s safe to say that most of our clients these days have already experienced firsthand the quality and creativity of our work before they hire us. They likely have received an invitation of ours from a family or friend and intimately know the thrill of receiving a commissioned Ladyfingers Letterpress invitation in the mail and want their guests to feel the same way.

Southwestern Mixed Media Wedding Invitations by Ladyfingers Letterpress

A few years back, we had created pretty insane baby shower invitations for some close friends who are in the film industry in New York. A guest of that shower, Alex Bolotow, was dating the iconic fashion photographer Terry Richardson at the time, and when they became engaged, she called us up right away with tons of enthusiasm and ideas.

Alex and Terry were planning an intimate gathering at a remote and serene southwestern desert location outside of Taos, New Mexico and wanted to give their guests a preview of the warmth, love, and realness that they would soon be experiencing on their wedding day. A gift of excitement, a collection of beautiful things both close to their hearts and to the heart of the place they wed.

Southwestern Mixed Media Wedding Invitations by Ladyfingers Letterpress

We worked together for ten months to create something that could hardly be deemed an invitation. A gift, maybe. More like a finely curated assemblage of meaningful things, like opening the lid of a close friend’s favorite collection of personal objects. Alex and Terry wanted the suite to be as personal, tactile and location-centric as possible. The concept took on a three-dimensional form, and the invitations were shipped in large hand-lettered kraft boxes that were carefully opened to uncover a sun-kissed wooden box overflowing with the invitation and supporting objects.

We hand lettered the invitation and foil printed it in gold foil onto sturdy and semi-translucent pieces of mica. Additional pieces such as their RSVP and Smudge Blessing Card were letterpress printed on thick cotton paper. We worked with local artist Pipilo Road to design and manufacture handmade wooden boxes out of reclaimed materials. The lids were hand painted and screen printed. We went through several iterations where we sent videos of different prototypes back and forth before a design was settled and the boxes were fabricated.

Soft, tobacco deerskin leather pouches were carefully designed, stitched and hand burned by Three Arrows Leather out of Taos. Alex helped us source sage bundles, quartz rocks, vintage matches from New Mexican locations and palo santo sticks to complete the suite and allow their guests to conduct a Smudge Blessing of their own. All of these items, plus a hand-drawn map of Taos and a celestial map of the night sky on the date of their wedding, were carefully tucked into the handmade wooden box which was designed to fit perfectly within an outer shipping box.

We got to know Alex over the time we spent working together, and now consider her a close friend. In fact, she and Terry surprised us with an invitation to their wedding, which we happily accepted. We’re still reeling from our time spent in Taos with this lovely couple and are happy to finally share these photos taken by Lauren Memarian with you! Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

We love love love watching our Designer Rolodex friends celebrate milestones, like adding to their families! And today is truly a special day, because we get to share the baby announcements that Jackie of Sincerely, Jackie designed for her little guy Richie’s welcome into the world! Jackie is known for her elegant invitation design, so it’s no surprise that she created these stunning and refined powder blue and vellum baby announcements for her own sweet boy. Congrats to the happy, and adorable, family!

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

From Jackie: We wanted these announcements to be a simple declaration of both Richie’s birth and his coming home, over three months later. When I was first hospitalized with HELLP Syndrome, my husband and I made the decision to be public with our journey. Many, many people kept us in their thoughts and prayers after our son was born 14 weeks early. We ended up mailing several hundred birth announcements, and I never shared the sentimental story behind them.

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

They may be overly simple, but they’re more meaningful than they appear. I purposefully kept the typography clean, and the colors subtle because I did not want to detract from the three most important things: Richie’s announcement, our two favorite photos, and the song that planted itself in my heart.

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

The announcements were digitally printed in a soft blue-grey on cotton paper, and contained two cards, each with a photo on one side, and typography on the other. The first, smaller card was our actual announcement containing both the date Richie was born (May 26, 2016, weighing 2lbs 2oz, and only 13.75″ long), and the day he came home from the NICU, 99 days later (September 1, 2016, weighting 7bs 6oz, and 20.25″ long) . The second card contained the lyrics from “Amazing Grace.”

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

When you go through something as life-changing as what my little family endured, you find peace anywhere it is offered. For me, I found that peace driving to the NICU one morning when “Amazing Grace” was playing on the radio. I hadn’t really cried before that. Not like, cried cried, if you know what I mean. But in the car that day, I had to pull over to the side of the highway to catch my breath. I felt an overwhelming sense that we’d be alright. Nearly every day after that, I would listen to any version of “Amazing Grace” that I could find on YouTube. About halfway through our NICU stay, little Richie was transferred from an isolette (incubator) to an open crib. A nurse, Patti, found a mobile in a storage room and felt compelled to get it to start working again. She stayed late that day to fiddle with the mobile, and proudly announced the next day that she had gotten it to work. The first song it played was “Amazing Grace.” I remember just standing there, in awe, as my little miracle baby slept peacefully under the mobile in his crib.

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

After Richie came home, I sang “Amazing Grace” every single night while I rocked him to sleep. It’s become the melody of our journey, and I felt it was important to include that in Richie’s birth announcement, although not many people knew the story behind it.

Refined Powder Blue and Vellum Baby Announcements

In addition to the two birth announcement cards, we added the invitation to our son’s baptism, which was sent to a select few family members. The baptism invitation featured a verse on one side, and the baptism details on the other, neatly slipped into a vellum envelope.
