DC Guide: Art + Letterpress Workshops

Illustration by Molly Jaques for Oh So Beautiful Paper

Every now and then I receive emails from new DC residents asking about art classes in the area.  So I thought I’d wrap up my little DC guide with a quick post about art and letterpress workshops in the DC area.  For this particular subject I’m expanding my boundaries to include options in Baltimore and Alexandria; it might be a bit farther for some DC residents to travel – but it’s worth it!

Meant to Be Calligraphy (Alexandria and Capitol Hill): Michele offers both Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen and Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen calligraphy classes, held at the Design Studio of Karson Butler Events in Capitol Hill and her home studio in Alexandria, Virginia. Students receive instruction as well as materials to continue refining their calligraphy skills at home.

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (Silver Spring):  Pyramid Atlantic recently celebrated its 31st anniversary, making it one of the longest-running art centers in the area. With a long list of experienced artists and instructors, Pyramid offers both studio rentals and art classes in a range of subjects, from letterpress printing and book arts to paper making and screen printing. For more experienced enthusiasts, you can also rent printing equipment after 5 hours of one-on-one instruction.

Typecase Industries (DC): Located in the O Street Studios in Northwest DC, this new letterpress, screen printing, and graphic design studio (run by three graduates of the Corcoran College of Art + Design) offers a limited number of workshops.

Baltimore Print Studios (Baltimore):  I had the pleasure of meeting BPS founders Kyle Van Horn and Kim Bentley at the Ladies of Letterpress Conference last year, and you might also remember them from their guest post on letterpress printing. Needless to say, these two know their stuff and are happy to impart their knowledge on anyone interested in learning about letterpress and screen printing.  They offer both classes, workshops, as well as the opportunity to rent presses for your own special projects.

Torpedo Factory (Old Town Alexandria): The Torpedo Factory offers a number of non-accredited art classes for both kids and adults.  You can check out the course schedule here.

Corcoran College of Art + Design (DC):  The Corcoran College of Art + Design is the only art school (that I know of!) located in downtown DC. The Corcoran offers accredited BFA and MFA programs, along with a number of continuing education courses in everything from digital media design to illustration.

Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore):  The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is a full-fledged art school with both BFA and MFA programs.  But like the Corcoran College of Art + Design, MICA offers a number of continuing education courses, from fine arts to photography to ceramics.

p.s. For DC-based artists and designers, did you know that you can rent studio space at the O Street Studios?  Fun!

{happy weekend!}

So now that our big news is out, it’s time to wish you all a wonderful weekend!  Next week, the husband and I are jetting off to St. Lucia for a few days of rest and relaxation – I can’t wait!  While we’re away I’ll be sharing a little mini guide to DC, from restaurants to shops to museums.  I hope you enjoy the guide!  But in the meantime…

This week on Oh So Beautiful Paper:

That’s it for me this week!  We’re taking a quick break from Cocktail Fridays until after we get back from our trip, but if you’re looking or a fun recipe to try this weekend – try two of my favorite recipes so far: the Aviation or Vieux Mot.  Have a wonderful weekend!  xoxo

Calligraphy Inspiration: Behind the Scenes with Kathryn Murray

There’s nothing better than a good look behind the scenes, especially when it involves something as gorgeous as calligraphy.  We’re so used to seeing the final product, but it’s a real treat to see how it came to be.  The beautiful writing, the colourfully styled tables. When Kathryn Murray sent over this behind the scenes video, I knew I had to share it with you!  You may remember Kathryn’s amazing work from a previous post and countless real life weddings.  Here she gives us a glimpse at what goes into showcasing her work in her perfectly styled photos. – Julie

Edge Painted Business Cards from Antiquaria

You already know Bailey and Emma, the lovely and talented ladies behind Antiquaria, from their regular DIY tutorials here on Oh So Beautiful Paper – not to mention their custom wedding invitations and vintage shop.  Bailey and Emma recently redesigned their business cards, and I’m loving the beautiful knockout calligraphy logo and soft aqua edge painting!

From Bailey and Emma: We wanted to make something unique while keeping in line with our brand image.  The cards were letterpress printed in black and copper on super thick cotton paper.  We then added the edge painting ourselves because, after all, who doesn’t love a pop of color?

Thanks ladies!

DIY Rubber Stamp Equestrian Wedding Invitations

We love horses at Antiquaria and find ourselves constantly drawn to and inspired by vintage horse imagery.  Today we’re thrilled to be able to show you how to create a sophisticated equestrian themed invitation suite all your own!  This suite is subtle but definitely sets the stage for horse farm or equestrian center nuptials.  The color palette of hunter green, peach, and cream helps elevate the overall look and make it fresh.  The best part?  The stamped leather tag! – Bailey and Emma of Antiquaria

Step One: Set an A7 (5″x7″) piece of card stock on a hard, clean surface.  Ink your invitation stamp (we used our Equestrian Invitation stamp) thoroughly with a hunter green stamp pad.  Center stamp over card stock and carefully set down.  Press moderately on the stamp.  Too firm and it will smudge and too softly will not give a clear print.  Remove stamp and let the ink dry.

Step Two: Repeat the printing technique in step one on a 4bar (3.5″x5″) piece of paper.  We used our Equestrian reply card stamp for this piece.

Step Three: The little “extras” are what really make your invitation your own.  For this suite, we wanted to bring in a different texture for the monogram tag used to tie the whole thing together.  Cut leather into 2″ x 2″ squares.  Punch a 1/8″ hole in the left corner of the square.  Install a metal grommet in the hole to give it a clean and professional finish.

Now you’re ready to stamp!!  Ink your stamp (we used our Handwritten Calligraphy Names monogram) and center it on the leather.  Apply pressure (you can be a bit more gently this time since the surface is softer) and make your print. Let dry.

Step Four:  Stamp your return and reply address on the respective A7 and 4bar envelopes.  It is wise and a huge money saver to use the same stamp for both!  We used our Vintage Horseshoe return address stamp for this suite.  Cut a liner to fit your A7 outer envelope.  You will want it to sit right under the adhesive.  You can either cut it yourself or have your local print shop cut them all for you.  To insert the liner,  place a line of double stick tape or stick glue across the top  and slide it into position and press to secure.  Fold at the crease with a bone folder to get a nice, crisp edge.
