Kearsley + Edward’s New England Quahog Wedding Invitations

Well this is fun! A collaboration between artist Kearsley Lloyd and Albertine Press, these invitations feature a bright and colorful color palette with a regional New England Quahog inspired design – and some beautiful watercolor illustrations to boot. Pretty!

From Kearsley: Having designed custom wedding monograms and crests for years, I was especially eager to craft an invitation suite for my own wedding. All of my designs begin by hand with an original watercolor and gouache illustration, which I then manipulate digitally. The watercolor painting is preserved for use on stationery and paper goods while the digital version can be converted to any color scheme to feature on embroidery, screen printing, stamping, and other decorative uses for weddings…and well beyond.

Our save the date was flat printed to preserve the unique appearance of the watercolor, and then invitations were letterpress printed by Albertine Press. It introduced and established the colorful theme and playful impression that carried through the invitation and entire sequence of wedding events.

Our wedding was to take place at my family’s home on the Rhode Island coast, so we chose to feature the well-recognized Rhode Island Quahog (also known as a cherrystone clam) in our theme. Since my husband and I live in Bermuda, a British colony, the Hog Penny had become a symbol of our new life together and a fun secondary theme. Finally, a little research turned up a handy coincidence: my fiancé’s Celtic family crest indeed featured wild boars! You can imagine what fun we had, once the ‘Qua-Hog’ theme was established!

I love taking a twist on traditional letterpress printing by infusing it with unusual colors and pattern. Echoing the fish scale pattern of our save the date card, I introduced an intertwined monogram design that served as the central theme of our wedding day décor. The painted edge on the invitation tied the color palette together beautifully. To that, I added a colorful tri-fold schedule of weekend events, as well as custom postage for the outer and RSVP envelopes. The design from the back of the dave the date greeting became the perfect pattern for the envelope liner, and my vibrant watercolor map design was a handy travel guide, included in a welcome bag for out-of-town guests.

Mina + Ian’s Modern Wood Veneer Wedding Invitations

These wedding invitations are part natural rustic beauty and part bold modern design. Created by Mina and Ian of Birdwalk Press for their own wedding, the suite reflects both Mina’s upbringing in the Northwest and Ian’s love of cinema. Such a great combination of influences!

From Mina and Ian: As wedding suite designers and letterpress printers, we didn’t take our own wedding invitations lightly. In fact, it was quite the challenge to develop a suite that we were both happy with – we were our most difficult clients yet! Here’s what resulted from months of design revisions and printing tests.

The suite was conceived and printed by yours truly (Mina & Ian Johnson of Birdwalk Press). We wanted to design a bold, modern feeling invitation that incorporated elements of Mina’s Northwest upbringing and Ian’s passion for cinema and typography. The suite features bold, structured design elements as well as light, organic forms to give a balanced feel reflective of our wedding’s aesthetic. It was all printed on our first press: a treadle-powered 200 year old Old Style Gordon restored and recovered from a chicken coop.

The star of our suite is the invitation itself: letterpress printed on real maple wood veneer, each invitation was completely unique with its own grain pattern and unique texture. The title font is Futura, one of filmmaker Wes Anderson’s go-to fonts for his films (remember the yellow titles in Life Aquatic?). Three of the four paper pieces are printed with incredibly light green fern silhouettes, incorporating that lush Northwest rainforest feel. We printed these inserts on 220# fluorescent white Crane’s Lettra.

The whole suite was wrapped in jute twine with a printed maple tag, and sealed in a charcoal gray mailing box from Design Aglow.

Urbanic Faves | California Dreaming

Good day sunshines!  When I was debating what to put up for my monthly guest post here on Oh So Beautiful Paper, I decided to pick something very close to home (okay well technically my present home) – Los Angeles!  As some of you might already know, I’m originally from the East Coast.  Believe me when I tell you that it definitely took a while to adapt to the lifestyle here on the West.  I’m proud to say that these days my affection for both sides of the country is equal and my heart has become bi-coastal. There really is so much to love here in L.A.  The colors, the optimism, the sunsets, and we cannot forget about the tacos!

Here’s a little collection of some things from around Urbanic and beyond that celebrate this golden city.

Party Paper: Pot(Luck) of Gold

St. Patrick’s Day never gets as much attention as some of the other holidays (especially when Easter is just around the corner!), but I think it’s always worth celebrating. With a potluck (of gold), that is! Throw a little gilded gathering at work, with friends or with the kids and celebrate that pot of gold we’re all searching for at the end of the rainbow. —Kelly
