Derby de Mayo Party Invitations

For those of you who celebrate Cinco de Mayo or the Kentucky Derby, you’re going to want to go ahead and save/pin/bookmark these adorable Derby de Mayo party invitations from Lauren Chism Fine Papers for future inspiration! Lauren and her husband host an annual Kentucky Derby party (you can see some past examples here), and she faced a wee bit of a design challenge when the Kentucky Derby fell on Cinco de Mayo earlier this year. The resulting papel picado-inspired invitations are super cute – take a look!

From LaurenAs our annual derby party comes around each year, the (self-imposed) pressure mounts – how do I keep designing something new for the same party, year after year? It’s always a challenge, but this year, the universe threw me a bone and the Kentucky Derby fell another celebratory day, Cinco De Mayo! The excitement mounted… Fascinators and Sombreros? Mint Juleps and Margaritas? Southern Snacks and Tex Mex Treats? Yes please! So just like that, Derby De Mayo was born!*

*(Side note: I then googled it, and being that the derby is the first weekend in May, this turned out to not be the most unique idea in the world, but whatever, it was a new original theme for us!)

Derby de Mayo Party Invitations by Lauren Chism

Apparently, all I need is a good theme to kick-start my creativity, because from there, the ideas were flowing. I really wanted to do some kind of papel picado inspired design, but I wanted to make it reasonably affordable (I can get carried away sometimes), so I found a way!

The ‘flags’ are just A2 cards, digitally printed and die-cut with the scallop shape that my printer offers. To make them more realistic, I went through and punched holes in every scallop… one. by. one. My toddler even got in on the action ‘pretending to help me’, so it was a family affair. It actually wasn’t that bad and made it more affordable than ordering a custom die.

I don’t typically design with a lot of color, but with the Derby Day invitations, I tend to get some practice and this was the ultimate color exercise. Over the years, we’ve made some reusable derby items, like napkins and koozies, so I picked our ‘signature’ green and blue and paired them with pink and orange. They are bright, fun and festive. I love how they turned out and our guests seem to love them, too!

Fresh and Modern Citrus Wedding Invitations

I know winter is technically citrus season, but these fresh and modern citrus wedding invitations from Lauren and Kari of Tied and Two are just so bright and cheerful – and perfect for summer weddings! This invitation features delicate citrus blossom illustrations on the main invitation, with a bold citrus envelope liner. I’m also especially digging those colorful envelopes from Cards & Pockets – the deep cobalt blue paired with the yellow and orange citrus is a match made in heaven! Doesn’t it remind you of the gorgeous coastline of southern Italy – or even the Greek Isles???

Fresh and Modern Citrus Wedding Invitations by Tied and Two

From Lauren and Kari: We loved working with Cari and Evyn and creating this custom wedding invitation design for their citrus-oriented Napa Valley wedding theme. The brides’ requests included warm colors, citrus fruits, and vintage illustrations. They also wanted to utilize minimalist design in combination with accent pieces to add great contrast and vibrance.

Fresh and Modern Citrus Wedding Invitations by Tied and Two

We combined vintage citrus illustrations with modern and minimalist typography. We also used colors outside of the invitation suite for the envelopes that gave the package a pop like no other, hence cobalt blue and deep orange envelopes. Other pieces for this suite included custom stamps, insert cards, and a custom-illustrated map. In the end, the result was a high-energy modern invitation set that welcomed their guests to the joyous occasion with zest and spunk.

Working on custom projects cross-country can be tricky, especially when working over the phone and email, as details may not always be articulated as quickly or clearly as they are in person. Thankfully, that was not the case with this project. The concept came quickly and we were all on the same page throughout the entire process. We are SO proud of the end result and anxious to share it with the world!

Inspiring Calligraphers: Manayunk Calligraphy

Hey everyone! I’m honored to share the work here of a new favorite calligrapher, Kim Shrack of Manayunk Calligraphy. I love that Kim’s work has dabbled in using calligraphy for the everyday, calligraphy for special moments, calligraphy for super fun projects (hello, a Bachelorette nursery!), and calligraphy to give voice to a cause she feels passionate about. Let’s dive in! Jen

Bachelorette fans, take note…

Inspiring Calligraphers: Manayunk Calligraphy

Here’s a peek at one of Kim’s favorite projects to work on! She created a calligraphy mural for none other than the former Bachelorette Desiree Siegfried (née Hartsock) and her husband Chris. Monica Mangin from The Weekender was tasked with designing a Pacific Northwest-style nursery for the couple, and Kim was pulled in to create an accent wall. Kim shares, “I pulled quotes from some of my favorite children’s books for the design. What I loved about this project is the idea that as their baby grows and learns to read, he’ll be surrounded by those words everyday – words that encourage him to be strong, kind and brave. It’s such a huge honor to be a small part of that.”

“I absolutely love doing murals!” says Kim.

On creating lettering work beyond paper, Kim shares: I love working on non-paper surfaces. I’ve done lots of non-traditional place cards, so calligraphy on materials like marble, slate, etc. But by far my favorite non-paper place cards have also been the sweetest – macarons! It’s a very delicate process involving teeny tiny brushes, luster dust and a steady head – but the results are oh so lovely.

In addition to all the lettering work Kim produces, she also teaches calligraphy courses on Skillshare. Her courses have been named Staff Picks (a designation for the top 1% of all classes) and she’s been named a Teacher to Watch (go Kim!). The two available classes are Modern Brush Calligraphy for Beginners and Develop Your Own Calligraphy Style.

Finally, Kim created this print (and there are tote bags) benefitting RAICES. Here’s what she had to say about this fundraising project and using her voice in this way as a creative artist who’s also a business owner.

Kim shares: Like an overwhelming number of people, I was very affected by the news that families who were entering the US seeking asylum were separated at the border. As an American, it disturbed me. As a new mother, it ripped out my heart. I researched organizations that were working to reunite families, and that’s how I found the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, or RAICES. I learned that those parents who were detained were unable to be reunited with their children until they could pay their full bond — which is a minimum of $1,500. So I created a special collection of designs to benefit RAICES. 100% of the profits from the sale of these items when to RAICES, and I am thrilled to say that through the sale of these items on my website and in-person fundraisers by the Glenside Women for Progress, and a direct fundraiser on Facebook, we were able to raise $1,537 — enough to bail one person from detention and reunite a family.

Common sense says that it’s not smart to mix business and politics. I get that. Posting on this issue led directly to a loss of followers and subscribers. But here’s the thing: human rights are not political. Period. As human beings, we have an obligation to one another. When you see something that isn’t right, you can’t just “stay out of it.” Speak up. Donate your time or your money or both. Someday, my daughter, who is 9 months old, will learn about this period of American history in school. When she comes home and asks my husband and I what we did, I’m not going to say that we stayed out of it. That is was impolite to talk about such things. That is was bad for business. Instead, I’m going to tell her that I used the skills I had to try and do something. And more than that, I’m going to tell her that thanks to a group of people whose only commonality is that they like calligraphy, we were able to reunite a family. That’s worth more than any follower.

A big thank you to Kim for sharing her work!

Moody and Glam Romantic Wedding Invitations

Oh, hello gorgeous floral envelope liner! These moody and glam romantic wedding invitations from Amy of Smitten on Paper had me at those beautiful bold florals, but it was true love when I saw the matte gold foil, hand dyed silk ribbon, and seed paper in the rest of the invitation suite! The floral pattern on the envelope liner and plantable seed paper speaks to the couple’s love of the outdoors, while the dark and moody tones and matte gold foil are pure elegance and romance!

From Amy: How do you choose wedding invitations when you have all of the options at your fingertips? Kathryn, our custom production manager and strategic planning lead, had a vision for her wedding but was overwhelmed with choices when it came to her wedding invitations.

Moody and Glam Romantic Wedding Invitations by Smitten on Paper

Kathryn and her fiancé Terry planned their wedding in their hometown of Branson, Missouri. The festivities included a week of activities with multiple locations and events and coordinating family and friends from near and far. Naturally, their invitation needed to capture the feeling of their event and provide all of the necessary information for guests.

They settled on a square folded invitation with a silk ribbon pocket to keep all of the important information in one place. They added matte gold foil stamping for a touch of luxe. The end result is a stunning suite that touches on their dark romance wedding theme, their love for the outdoors and their personality as a couple.

The full invitation suite features matte gold foil stamping, letterpress printing and digital accent pieces. Hand dyed silk ribbon and a monogramed tag hold it all together. The dark grey folder opens up to the invite mounted on the right and cards neatly tucked under the ribbon on the left.

The reply card and small enclosure card were letterpress printed on handmade seed paper, a nod to Kathryn and Terry’s love for the outdoors and their naturally beautifully hometown in the Ozark mountain region. The reply envelope was foiled stamped with matte gold foil on wine envelopes for a touch of elegance.

All of the details for the week were included in a small booklet, meant to reflect the larger invite booklet. It was also a great place to bring in the dark romance florals from the envelope liner to tie the collection together. Guests were encouraged to plant their small enclosure card printed on seed paper as a memory of this special wedding. The whole suite was finished inside a gorgeous envelope liner customized with florals that pulled from their wedding colors. Addresses were hand written in gold ink for a personalized touch.
