Paper Flower Ideas

Spring is my favorite season. I practically live for Spring during the dark months of Winter, especially here on the East Coast where the winter months can be bitterly cold. I love seeing new green plants emerge from the ground, buds begin to open on the cherry blossom trees and lilac bushes, and it all just keeps getting better through peony season in May and rose season in the Summer. Paper flowers offer a much-needed dose of color and floral inspiration to get me through to Spring – and they make gorgeous decorations for weddings and parties! Here are some of my absolute favorite paper flower ideas!

Carry a Beautiful Bouquet
As much as I love real flowers, crepe paper flowers are seriously stunning in their own right. And you don’t have to limit yourself to in-season flowers or worry about the cost of expensive out-of-season blooms!

Paper Flower Backdrop
Clusters of large paper flowers make an amazing statement wall for parties of all kinds and look incredible as a ceremony backdrop for weddings! Group them together as closely as possible for a beautiful and abundant layered look, or arrange them above cake and refreshments for added visual interest.

Paper Flower Escort Cards
I’m a big fan of wedding details that serve double duty. These crepe paper poppies in small glass bottles are beautiful escort cards – and can also go home with guests at the end of the evening as wedding favors! You could even group several together on a table for a whimsical centerpiece.

Paper Flower Place Cards
This is such a wonderful idea for holiday dinners or smaller, more intimate weddings. Create (or purchase) your favorite flower from crepe paper, then add a place card in the shape of a leaf!

Paper Flower Chair Decoration
Looking for a special way to decorate chairs at a wedding or a bridal shower? Paper flowers to the rescue! Make a large single bloom and hang it on the back of a chair – or drape a paper flower garland between two chairs.

Create a Ceremony Arch
I love the idea of using paper flowers to create a ceremony arch. Make several sizes of paper flowers in your wedding color palette, then adhere to your ceremony arch using chicken wire and floral wire.

Isn’t this something straight out of a fairytale? These giant paper flowers are illustrated rather than made from crepe paper or tissue paper, then mounted on stalks made from chicken wire and covered with green crepe paper!

Decorate a Nursery
Last but definitely not least – can you imagine growing up in a room with giant paper flowers on the wall?! I honestly can’t imagine anything more beautiful or inspiring for a little girl’s room. And I love the added touch of Spanish Moss in the center of the flowers.

Quick Pick: Party Sally

Party Sally made their debut at last year’s National Stationery Show, and with this year’s just a few weeks away I thought I’d revisit some of their beautiful offerings! Party Sally is known for watercolor illustrations paired with hand lettered text paired and quirky copywriting. You might be familiar with their Rihannakah card, which we featured in our holiday card round ups and also made the rounds on social media last year. Citrus Wedding Inspiration

Today we’re celebrating one of our favorite wedding themes with some citrus wedding inspiration! Citrus is the perfect wedding theme any time of year. Plan a citrus-inspired indoor affair during cold weather months when citrus is in season down in the South, or incorporate citrus into your menu for a refreshing treat during the warm summer months. The ideas below will get you ready for sunshine, longer days, and lemonade (or in this case, limoncello!). –Annie

Modern Hand Painted Sumi Ink Invitations

There are lots of rules for wedding invitations, along with plenty of traditions, etiquette, and details to consider. But for a vow renewal, all rules go out the window! Megan and Drew chose to celebrate their marriage with an intimate ceremony and reception (with a super small guest list of close friends) that was a better reflection of their style than their wedding years before. They worked with Rachael of Hazel + Dolly to create these VERY cool and eclectic modern hand painted Sumi ink invitations. Each individual piece in this suite was hand painted, from the invitation to the RSVP card to the envelope! So creative and unique!

From RachaelThis invitation suite was for a vow renewal for a small group of friends of the couple. Each individual invitation, reply card, detail card, and envelope was hand painted. Every card had a unique watercolor wash using an amber-colored watercolor and lettering in dark black Sumi ink. Originally, I proposed this idea as a letterpress invitation suite, but when I found out how small the guest list was, we decided to do hand painted. The couple and I agreed that this added both a personalized and eclectic touch to the suite.

The couple, Megan and Drew, got married several years ago before the wedding industry really took off to become what it is today, and they were able to re-live that wonderful moment in their lives with an intimate ceremony and reception that was focused on their unique style. It truly evoked their love and the couple they’ve grown to be.

The paper used here is Savoy 236# (if you have familiarity with letterpress, this is my go-to for business cards and invitations because of its juicy thickness that allows for a deep impression). It’s also really wonderful for watercolor washes, which many of my brides want. The bright white offers a perfect background for the watercolor.

I used Sumi ink and a script liner brush for the lettering on the suite. For the envelopes, I used a script liner brush and Dr. Ph. Martin’s Gold Iridescent Ink – it has a gorgeous sheen but is still opaque enough for envelopes. The suite paired nicely with some stamps of my vintage stamp collection, and because so there were so few guests, I was able to add vintage postage to each envelope. I always consider envelopes with vintage postage to be mini art galleries, and always try to encourage my brides to go this route!
