Paper Party 2018 Modern Minimalist Invitations

Welcome to Paper Party week! If you’re a longtime reader, you probably know that I host a party for members the stationery industry during the National Stationery Show in New York each May – and this week I’m sharing the invitations and photos from this year’s party! The party is just a fun evening for everyone to come hang out and socialize in a way that isn’t really possible at the show, but this year I also partnered with the stationery industry’s advocacy organization, Writes for Women, to raise money for charity. And you guys! We raised more than seven THOUSAND dollars! Pretty good for our first try, huh? I’ll share photos from the party in another post, and then we’ll wrap up the week with a big giveaway just for OSBP readers of a few goodie bags from Paper Party 2018 filled with amazing stationery. But since we’re all about the paper around here, I thought that I’d start by sharing the amazing Paper Party 2018 modern minimalist invitations. I was lucky to work with an amazingly talented team, including Ramona & Ruth, Bella Figura, Legion Paper, Cards & Pockets, and Meant to Be Calligraphy â€“ this year’s design features modern abstract shapes in matte white foil on a deep green paper. It’s seriously the most dreamy combination!

I’ve been feeling really inspired by modern abstract shapes this year, so I immediately turned to Kim of Ramona & Ruth to create the invitation design. I’ve been loving the direction of her recent collections, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to collaborate! I came up with a color palette of mustard yellow, pale pink, lavender, and forest green and sent that to Kim along with a mood board that I created for the party. We started with a digital save the date that incorporated pretty much every color in the mood board, along with plenty of fun shapes and Kim’s beautiful monoline hand lettering.

We knew we needed to streamline the design a bit for the printed invitations. I fell in love with a gorgeous forest green Colorplan paper from Legion Paper, so Kim suggested printing the design in matte white foil. It was perfect! Bella Figura handled the printing, duplexing two sheets of the forest green paper for an extra thick invitation that also allowed us to add design and printing credits on the back of the invitation. Duplexing means pasting two sheets of paper together, creating one thick sheet of paper – and it’s the best way to letterpress or foil print on both sides of an invitation without having the text or graphics show through on the other side. This was our first time duplexing the paper party invitations, and the thicker sheet of paper definitely felt more substantial!

For the envelopes, I turned to Cards & Pockets – they have the largest selection of colorful envelopes I’ve ever seen! We went with a gorgeous dusty rose pink envelope and added a digitally printed envelope liner featuring some of the shapes and colors from the original save the date. I love seeing all these colors together!

Michele from Meant to Be Calligraphy addressed the envelopes in white ink in her monoline script style to complement Kim’s hand lettering. I love the relaxed feel of the monoline lettering with the modern minimalist vibes of the invitation design. And of course I couldn’t resist the new forever stamps designed by Rifle Paper Co.!

If you’ve heard me talk about the Modern Calligraphy Summit before, I probably sound like a broken record, but it really is just the most amazing group of online calligraphy classes from every single calligrapher that I would want to learn from in person if I had the opportunity. The classes including brush lettering, invitation design, envelope layouts, basic copperplate, writing on non-traditional surfaces, digitizing watercolor illustrations, and so much more! And as much as an in-person workshop would be totally amazing, it’s just as incredible to be able to learn from so many talented calligraphers from the comfort of your own home. The Modern Calligraphy Summit also includes handy templates and handouts, a private Facebook community to support you as you learn, and two bonus LIVE Q&A sessions with the instructors in January. And of course LIFETIME ACCESS to all the amazing content, so even if you can’t start the course material right now you can pick it up at your convenience – or go back and watch the videos as many times as you need to practice and get the hang of things!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration

You guys, I am SO excited for today’s post! I’m a big fan of anything rainbow (who isn’t??) and I love the look of white ink on bright colors, and this idea brings those two favorite things together! This concept came out of these DIY colorful watercolor envelopes that we did two years ago (!!), and I’m so excited to partner with Sakura of America to bring this rainbow watercolor wedding stationery inspiration to life. I enlisted Molly from Alchemy Calligraphy to work her calligraphy magic using Sakura’s Gelly Roll® Classic™ White pens (now available in three different weights!) on pieces of handmade paper that I painted with Sakura’s Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit. I’m so excited to share the results with you, along with the how-to so you can create beautiful rainbow watercolor stationery at home!

Okay, so there are two super exciting things happening here: first, the Sakura Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kits allowed me to mix my ideal rainbow color palette. Since so many pieces of paper were involved, I wanted to translate my rainbow inspiration into several different hues of each color, from the palest pink to the deepest blue and plenty of non-traditional hues in between. I’m seriously loving the terra cotta color under the quote piece below, especially paired with shades of pale pink, peach, and deep blue. So good! And second, the different weights of the Gelly Roll Classic White pens are the perfect tool for creating different lettering styles and illustrations on the watercolor paper – and the white ink is totally opaque, so it’s super clear and crisp!

I mean, if you’re going to send out colorful watercolor envelopes, you probably want to incorporate some color into your wedding stationery, right? You can also totally use these ideas for baby showers, birthday parties, or any other event! Every party needs a bit of color and texture, no matter the size of the party! You can go full rainbow like I did, or focus on a few colors from your own color palette – with watercolor, you can easily mix your any color, so the sky is the limit! And the opaque white ink ties everything together so the entire look is cohesive.

To create the rainbow watercolor wedding stationery, we used Sakura’s new 48-color Koi Watercolor Field Sketch Travel Kit to mix and paint dozens of different colors on handmade paper in varying sizes. I used Sakura’s refillable water brush to mix the paint colors in the detachable easel, then a larger, wider brush to paint the watercolor onto the paper in smooth strokes – leaving the tiniest white border around the edge. Also, the amount of water that you use helps determine the vibrancy of the colors. I used less water when I wanted really deep or bright colors, and more water when I wanted a lighter or more pastel color. Keep a test sheet of paper handy so you can test colors first before painting, since the colors can look different in the pan than on paper!

So much rainbow gorgeousness! I had place cards, menus, and table numbers in mind when choosing paper sizes, so we used mostly 2.5×3.5″ pieces and a few 5×7″ pieces. The key to achieving really bright and vibrant colors is to use handmade cotton rag paper – mine came from Fabulous Fancy Pants and Silk & Willow. I tried painting on store-bought watercolor paper but just really wasn’t able to get the colors that I wanted! The handmade paper totally did the trick.

That mustard yellow right there is just singing to me! So good!

Once everything is fully dry, you can start lettering! The Gelly Roll® Classic™ White pens come in three different weights – 05 fine (0.5mm), 08 medium (0.8mm), and 10 bold (1.0mm) – so you can really have fun with different lettering styles and calligraphy. Fine lines are perfect for elegant calligraphy on a wedding invitation, while the medium and bold lines are fun for more non-traditional lettering on place cards and menus. You can also mix different lettering styles, from script to serif to all caps – the most important thing is to have fun with whatever styles you choose!

Is there anything better than beautiful watercolors combined with soft deckled edges? It’s just the perfect combination!

I love the way Molly from Alchemy Calligraphy added these sweet botanical illustrations to the table numbers! Such a fun way to dress up a simple table number design. I love the way the white ink pops against the watercolor, and the texture of the handmade paper also adds such a special and unique touch.

Inspiring Calligraphers: Stephanie Hino of Double Dipped Calligraphy

Hello everyone! We all know double dipping is a no-no when it comes to party dips, but when it comes to fancy lettering, let’s just say you’re going to say a big yes to the pretty work of Double Dipped Calligraphy. Stephanie Hino, the artistic force behind the collection, shares a peek at her work and her inspiration. Let’s dip in, shall we? Jen

Inspiring Calligraphers: Double Dipped Calligraphy

On what inspires her lettering style, Stephanie shares: “The thing that attracted me to modern calligraphy was the movement of the letters and words across a page. Whenever I’m working on something, my goal is to make my lettering look effortless and organic. The tension between creating free flowing words while also demonstrating restraint is a beautiful thing!”

On her favorite project, Stephanie shares: “I love trying new things that I haven’t seen before. One of my favorite projects was the Hangar 21 grand opening from last summer. There were several vignettes at the event that I was able to contribute to, each unique and so fun. The hand painted, clear acrylic chargers and tropical leaf menus were a couple of my favorites.”

On doing calligraphy on non-paper surfaces, Stephanie says: “While I’ll always be a paper lover, it is so fun to work on other surfaces. Some favorites have been greenery, leather jackets, and acrylic. I acquired a laser machine in the last year and it’s been a whole new journey of possibilities. Acrylic has especially been a popular choice recently, whether I’m writing directly on it, engraving, or cutting my lettering out of it.”

On top of all the beautiful lettering work, can we talk about these amazing color palettes, too? So pretty! Thanks again to Stephanie for sharing a peek inside her work!
