A Frozen Cocktail Party

It’s August, which here in DC means plenty of long and hot summer days. So for the next installment in our summer cocktail party series, we’re partnering with St-Germain to offer some ideas to help cool off with friends. I was also super excited to collaborate with the amazingly talented ladies of Sweet Root Village for this project on both the photography and beautiful floral arrangements. The result is my favorite yet in the series: a frozen cocktail party!

Shannon from The Paper Cub designed the invitations – I’m a huge fan of her unique hand lettering style! The invitations also feature illustrations of fruit, cold drinks, and other summer motifs perfect for a late summer gathering. Lauren from A Fabulous Fete (and one of our talented DIY contributors!) addressed the envelopes in her whimsical style using bright pink watercolor.

Okay – now onto the party! Our overall inspiration came from bright summer colors – specifically aqua, pink, and yellow – and anything beachy or summery. I’m a big fan of creating individual stations at a party to keep guests moving around and avoid a bottleneck around the bar. So for this cocktail party we designed three cocktail stations, each featuring a different frozen recipe designed to be enjoyed with a group of friends. Our first cocktail station features our first ever cocktail granita: a St-Germain and blackberry granita! (On a related note: I now want to granita everything.)

Remember Lauren’s DIY tutorial for these awesome spray painted acrylic menu signs? Here they are in action! The giant pink and blue popsicle was made with crepe paper fringe and gold mylar fringe based on this tutorial from Jordan.

The floral arrangements from Sweet Root Village included bright shades of yellow and pink with air plants and succulents mixed in – along with a few smaller arrangements with fragrant tuberose and succulents in small terra cotta pots. I love the combination of different textures in all the arrangements!

For our second cocktail station, I created a bar sign using paper flowers pieced together from different Paper Source flower kits and giant letters cut from cardboard boxes. We mixed in some colorful honeycombs in our party colors – and of course more beautiful floral arrangements. It was the perfect backdrop for our second cocktail: a frozen St-Germain daiquiri!

Our third cocktail station features another acrylic cocktail sign that I made using Lauren’s DIY tutorial – and what might be my favorite idea from the entire day: build-your-own St-Germain margarita snow cones! We mixed our margarita base with three different syrups inspired by our favorite summer flavors: mint-basil, watermelon, and blueberry. You can also enjoy the syrups by themselves for a non-alcoholic version, or even turn the syrups into popsicles!

I love the idea of repurposing party decor as favors – so our air plants and tiny potted succulents became favors with the help of a beautiful watercolor calligraphy sign by Lauren.

Wedding Stationery Inspiration: Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea’s bright pops of color made it an instant hit on blogs and social media. It naturally worked its way onto the wedding scene in every piece from the alter to the dinner table. While bougainvillea is a beautiful vine that can be incorporated into many spaces of your wedding day, there is also a lot of inspiration to be pulled from its vibrant colors. – Lauren

Bougainvillea Wedding Inspiration

My initial inspiration came from this gorgeous bohemian wedding on Green Wedding Shoes. Taking a cue from the various tones of coral and pink, here are some fun ways to incorporate bougainvillea into for your wedding day.

Happy Weekend!

Well, hello August! My dad is coming down this weekend to help with some pre-baby house projects – and he’s staying all week, such a treat! I’m excited for Sophie to get some Grandpa time, which sadly doesn’t happen nearly often enough. I’m heading out to prepare for a few projects and (ahem) tidy up the house a bit, but in the meantime…

Cooper’s Whimsical + Modern Birth Announcements

Every birth announcement tells a story, but some stories are more complex than others – even happy stories. Today I’m honored to share the whimsical announcements that Brooke from Paper & Parcel created for her beautiful baby boy, Cooper, and to give Brooke a chance to tell her story in her own words.

From Brooke: The first time I looked into my son’s eyes, I knew he had Down syndrome. We didn’t know prior to Cooper’s birth so the diagnosis took us by surprise. The weeks following his birth were a blur of doctor’s visits, sleepless nights, and falling head-over-heels in love with our beautiful baby boy. While most of our friends and family knew of his arrival and condition, as a stationer, I knew I had to send out birth announcements.

I wanted to design of the announcement to be as unique and special as my darling boy. Right away I knew that I wanted the design to be an envelope within an envelope. Recipients peel off the polka dotted washi tape to discover Cooper’s photo peeking out of the envelope. The back of the photo includes all his birthday stats. The photo/birthday stats and note are flat printed on 120# paper. I also wanted to incorporate fun, whimsical patterns. Both envelopes are lined with a flat printed triangle pattern and the cross-hatch pattern is letterpress printed on 220# Crane Lettra.

My husband and I felt it necessary to include a note about our little man. Learning that our son had Down syndrome was a mix of emotions – grief yet joy, sorrow yet happiness. It took a while to write the note.

My husband and I went through at least a dozen iterations before finally landing on: “Cooper came into the world a month early. As our midwife put it, “He has things to do. People and places to see.” Shortly after he was born, Cooper let us in on his little secret: he has a genetic condition called Trisomy 21, otherwise known as Down syndrome. We were shocked and confused at first. But in our son’s emerging personality, we see a young man infinitely curious about the world. His blue eyes catch on shapes and patterns that make him giggle with delight. He is tenacious and precocious and will be crawling and walking before we know it. Cooper may have Down syndrome, but it’s clear there is much more to our little man than an extra chromosome. We are delighted that he has chosen us to be his parents. Please join us in welcoming Cooper to our family.”

Such a beautiful announcement – thank you Brooke!

Perpetually Chic’s Letterpress + Calligraphy Business Stationery

I love love love a beautiful business card – who doesn’t?!? So I was thrilled when Sarah from Studio SloMo sent over the letterpress and foil stamped business cards and custom business stationery that she designed for her friend Lauren of Perpetually Chic. I love the crisp navy and white color palette – and of course the beautiful calligraphy logo by Julie Song Ink!

From Sarah: My good friend Lauren Craig of Perpetually Chic came to me for help in redesigning her blog from logo to stationery to website. She loves all things simple and timeless which comes across well in this paired down set of business stationery. We used a white and navy duplexed paper with letterpress printing on one side and white foil stamp on the other for her business cards. The clean letterpress printed notecard showcases the “Perpetually Chic” logo Julie Song so beautifully hand lettered. Lauren typically uses a metallic gold pen to address the deep navy envelopes.
