Heather’s Creative Calligraphy Wedding Invitations + Holiday Cards

After falling in love with stationery before her June 2011 wedding with Karson Butler Events, Heather decided to infuse her wedding stationery style into a beautiful holiday card. Heather worked with calligrapher Betsy Dunlap to create her wedding invitations, then letterpress printed them herself at a local art studio. For her first holiday card as a newlywed, Heather once again incorporated Betsy’s beautiful calligraphy along with one of her favorite wedding photos from Katie Stoops. Both suites were accented with toile envelope liners and vintage stamps inspired by their historic wedding venue.

From Heather: Our wedding took place at Tuckahoe Plantation in Richmond, Virginia, where my husband – and also Thomas Jefferson – grew up.  With the help of Karson Butler Events, we took wedding inspiration from Tuckahoe itself and, in particular, the blue toile fabric decorating my favorite bedroom in the main house – the toile became the envelope liners and table linens at the wedding.  I learned to letterpress print so that I could create my own invitations using Betsy Dunlap’s lovely calligraphy, which is reminiscent of Thomas Jefferson’s handwriting!

Our wedding was so lovely, I wanted to recreate the feeling (and reuse my new printing skills) in our holiday cards.  So we used the same beautiful “Jeffersonian” script, but this time with red toile liners and a photograph of our wedding from our photographer Katie Stoops.  I had collected vintage stamps from ebay for our wedding and had plenty of Christmas ones left over, which was perfect for our holiday mailing.

From Amber and Emily of Karson Butler Events: When Heather learned how to letterpress print for her June 2011 wedding, we were in awe!  Heather worked with calligrapher Betsy Dunlap to create her custom invitation suite.  Heather then printed her invitations at local art studio Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring. Finished with hand-selected vintage stamps and blue toile envelope liners, Heather and Addison’s guests were invited to a gorgeous Southern wedding held at the groom’s childhood home.  To date, it has been one of our favorite weddings to help design.

{happy weekend!}

I haven’t shared any photos of Sophie recently, so I thought I’d end the week with a little update on my sweet little girl. She’s 2.5 months now (11 weeks to be exact), smiling up a storm, and interested in everything and everyone. She had a blast meeting new friends and family members over Thanksgiving weekend! I also hinted on twitter earlier this week that we’ve encountered some sleeping issues, so I’m one tired mama these days! Sophie is at the stage where she really wants to be awake for longer stretches but just can’t quite handle it, so we’re trying to find the right balance between awake time and nap time during the day so that we both minimize her meltdowns and can hopefully get her to sleep for longer stretches at night. I think I might do cartwheels the first night we get 6 or more hours out of her! Seriously. Anyway, this weekend we’re hoping to check out Holiday Heap in Baltimore and maybe even visit the National Aquarium (I’ve never been!). But in the meantime…

Drew + Kyle’s Floral Fall Wedding Invitations

Winter may be coming, but I’m doing my best to hold on to fall for as long as possible. Johanna from Arbor Corner Studio sent over these lovely eggplant purple wedding invitations that she created for a September wedding. Johanna incorporated a floral motif that complemented the classic type and layout. So pretty!

From Johanna: Drew and Kyle have a classic sense of style, with touch of modern. The main wedding accent color was a beautiful eggplant purple, just perfect for a September wedding! Their wedding was very formal, and their reception a big party! Drew wanted a new twist on a floral design, so I designed a floral motif that could be used throughout the wedding materials.

We paired the invitation with an eggplant envelope. Drew addressed the envelopes with a champagne-colored metallic pen. The simple one-color letterpress invitation suite and programs perfectly complemented the style of their fall wedding.

Megan + Mike’s Whimsical Pink and Gold Confetti Wedding Invitations

After sending out their seaside save the dates, Megan and Mike decided to go in a more celebratory direction for their wedding invitations. Nichole from Coral Pheasant created a vibrant design inspired by Kate Spade, champagne, and confetti. The invitation suite was letterpress printed in bright pink and gold foil – these invitations practically sparkle!

From Nichole: Megan loves Kate Spade and all things paper – a girl after my own heart! She knew right away that she wanted her wedding invitations to reflect the playful aesthetic of Kate Spade. The result was the epitome of all things fun and celebratory: champagne, chevron pattern, and confetti in shades of punchy pink and gold.

The invitation combines a playful script font with a quirky serif and gold confetti. The individual pieces are a mix of letterpress and gold foil on heavy weight cotton Lettra paper, with the main invitation edge tinted in bright pink for an extra pop of color.

The individual pieces were stacked according to size and tied with a navy silk ribbon. The topmost item was a pink coin envelope with a gold glitter wedding website card – a simple piece that delighted everyone when they opened the envelope!

In researching ideas for Megan and Mike’s invitation, I came upon a quote from Jane Austen’s Emma. It reads: “It darted through her with the speed of an arrow that Mr. Knightly must marry no one but herself!” I had already incorporated the arrow as a graphic element and the quote paired beautifully with the design with one slight modification: Mr. Knighly was replaced with the groom’s last name. It was a perfect fit! We incorporated the quote into the chevron pattern envelope liner.

Megan + Mike’s Seaside Photo Save the Dates

Happy Monday everyone! Have you recovered from your Thanksgiving food coma yet? I’m still a bit groggy myself, but I’m thrilled to be starting the week off with Megan and Mike’s gorgeous wedding stationery from Nichole at Coral Pheasant – starting first with their save the dates! Nichole created a fun trifold design incorporating their save the date photos, but I’m particularly smitten with the unique envelope layout!

From Nichole: Megan and Mike’s seaside engagement photos were the jumping off point for their save the date inspiration. To bring in an element of playfulness and discovery, I created two pockets by sewing the envelope in half. One side housed a tri-fold card of their photos and the other side contained a card with their wedding website information.

A striped fuchsia envelope liner coordinated with the fuchsia stitching and quirky calligraphy by Crystal Kluge completed the look. How could you not be excited to reserve the date for this darling duo?!
