Dusty Blue and Pink Wedding Invitations on Handmade Paper

It’s September, which means the days of cool weather and fall foliage are just around the corner. I’m loving these dusty blue and pink wedding invitations on handmade paper by Lauren Clements of LineAve Calligraphy for a fall wedding – or a wedding any time of year, really. Lauren’s beautiful calligraphy and illustrations are absolutely beautiful against that gorgeous handmade paper by Farmette Press. And those Louisiana themed vintage postage stamps are the perfect finishing touch!

From Lauren: I loved designing my own wedding stationery! The invitation suite is letterpress printed on handmade paper in blue, pink, and cream tones. The design also incorporated a minimal line drawing of the church with some greenery accents. I used vintage stamps in a Louisiana theme to tell a story.

Our wedding ceremony took place at St. John Berchman’s Cathedral in Shreveport, Louisiana with aisles lined with fresh pomegranates and olive branches. The detail-packed outdoor reception was set on the lot of our future home.

The idea was a small, rustic, European-styled seated and plated dinner under the oak tree with 90 guests. The forecast called for a 90% chance of rain, and it wasn’t wrong. The tent that was supposed to cover a small seating area was enlarged to cover the entire event, and not an ounce of detail was lost. It was truly an inspirational ending to the dreaded “what do I do if it rains on my outdoor wedding?” question that I googled for 2 weeks straight. Guests kicked off their shoes and had the best celebration in mud up to their ankles. The photos turned out absolutely beautiful despite the FLOOD. Quality vendors are so important from hair that frizzes gracefully, to makeup that stays put, hot food that is served in a downpour, and of course, THE TENT that single-handedly saved the day.

As a stationer and calligrapher, I obsesses over detail. I designed and created my own save-the-dates, invitation suite, seating chart, and endless “day of” details like programs, menus, favor tags, flower cones, corn hole boards and bean bags, custom ice cream signs that incorporated our dogs, and cocktail napkins. The gate to the property and the Catholic church we were married in were both incorporated into the wedding stationery, adding a personal and special touch to the invitation suite and day-of stationery.

Navy and Leather Bachelor Party Invitations

These navy and leather bachelor party invitations by Kristin of Lustre Theory are a fun way to start the week! Beautiful deep blue and copper envelopes with calligraphy by Seniman Calligraphy, vintage postage stamps, and yes, plenty of leather details throughout the suite. Leather is such a fun way to add some texture to wedding invitations and party invitations, especially when paired with such beautiful jewel tones!

Blue and Leather Bachelor Party Invitations by Lustre Theory

From KristinI designed this unique stationery suite for an editorial shoot coordinated by A Lively Affair in Norfolk, Virginia. The shoot was inspired by the idea of an upscale fall bachelor party incorporating textures of leather, wood, and metal. The cigar and magnolia leaves, along with the leather pieces, help add the perfect southern touches.

Blue and Leather Bachelor Party Invitations by Lustre Theory

The invitation design was inspired by all the different textures mentioned above, from the leather outer envelope to the copper textured liner and dark navy inner envelope. It’s not often I get to design a stationery suite geared towards a primarily male event, which made this one extra exciting. I wanted the invitation design to have old southern charm combined with classic elegance. The beautiful envelope calligraphy by Seniman Calligraphy is the perfect contrast to the typography selections in the square invitation and rsvp card. We added vintage postage stamps to carry the color palette through to the envelope and add a touch of whimsical, outdoorsy artwork.

The invitations and RSVP card are letterpress printed in dark navy blue ink. Both are finished with a metallic copper edging process and pressed on extra thick white cotton paper. It was important that the invitation card and rsvp card have a strong typographical presence but an overall simple design layout. The leather pieces are all handmade to specification by HJ Leather Arts, a local craftsman in Norfolk. They include an outer main envelope, an invitation band and an event place card.

Inspiring Calligraphers: Sable and Gray Paper Co.

Hello everyone! I have something light and bright to share with you, and of course, it comes in the way of paper inspiration. We’re focusing on the work of Kristin Hussey, a calligrapher who runs Sable & Gray Paper Co. I think you’re going to love this uplifting inspiration as we take a peek at her lettering work. Let’s dive in! – Jen

From Kristin: I got my degree in Architecture, and after I graduated from school, I worked for a firm that I had dreamed of working at. It was fascinating and such a great opportunity, but I didn’t realize the reality of being a modern-day architect until I was working there: it had become a very computer-driven career with all of the models and drawings being done in computer programs. I really missed working with my hands so I decided to try out a different career path that would be more hands-on. So I got a job at a florist, which was just the change I needed. While I was working there, the florist merged with a stationery company, and asked if I would take over the custom stationery designs since I had a background in design, and I completely fell in love.

About a year later I went off on my own and started Sable & Gray, which has been such a beautiful adventure. I try to make each invitation a real work of art, incorporating as many hand-crafted details as possible. It only felt natural to learn calligraphy as well so I wouldn’t need to rely only on predesigned fonts. I took a calligraphy course from Molly Jacques (who is a true modern calligraphy legend!) about 4 years ago and never looked back!

I’ve developed my calligraphy style over the past four years with a goal to create a look that is elevated, yet approachable (and also legible!). I’ve looked up to other calligraphers like Molly Jacques (who taught me pointed-pen calligraphy) and Jenny Sanders (who is just amazing), but have tried to develop a style that is uniquely my own.

I love to incorporate calligraphy into my custom wedding invitation designs and will tweak my style a bit to fit the mood and aesthetic of each invitation suite. I especially love doing watercolor brush calligraphy because it’s so beautiful seeing the gradient and watching the colors bleed together throughout each word. They really look like a little piece of art in and of themselves.

It’s tough to pick a favorite project! I really love this custom invitation suite that features a combination of watercolor brush calligraphy and letterpress printing on double-thick paper (and it has gorgeous dusty-blue edge painting, too!). The custom die-cut Michigan-shaped response card is an extra special cherry on top of this dreamy suite.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen-Forty

I’m thrilled to introduce our next stationery designer, Tricia Kim of Fourteen-Forty! Based here in New York, Tricia works with couples on custom wedding stationery and has grown her business focused in the wedding industry for many years now. She’s here to share about how learning about production processes informed her design process and how her growing team approaches the design process with each client. —Megan Soh

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

From Tricia: I started Fourteen-Forty about six years ago, after years of designing in the magazine industry. Funny enough, my first job was actually for a wedding publication! While what I learned at these companies was invaluable, working for large brands made me realize that I really wanted to take ownership of something that I could put my heart into. I’ve always loved making things with my hands, so letterpress printing with its mix of art and mechanics came naturally to me, which is where this obsession with stationery all began.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

I was living in New York City when letterpress printing was really starting to emerge again as a craft, and I was able to find a lot of resources to start honing my skills as a printer. By no means did I ever completely master the art of printing, but it became a wonderful outlet for creativity and I loved the problem solving that it required. Looking back, I am so glad that I was able to learn the production side since understanding it from first hand experience has truly made me better equipped as a designer. Knowing the limitations, technical aspects, and possibilities helps me make good design decisions for my clients. As I gained experience at the press and became more embedded in the stationery community, the idea of Fourteen-Forty came to life (the name is an homage to the year moveable type was invented) and I slowly started building the company from the ground up.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Fast forward six years, and today Fourteen-Forty is primarily focused on designing custom wedding invitations. Located in the downtown area of Manhattan, we are a hardworking group of creatives dedicated to dreaming up unique keepsakes. We offer custom illustration, watercolor, typographical designs, all kinds of specialty printing, calligraphy, wax sealing, and more. We love working with paper along with other materials, like leather, fabric, acrylic, and wood. And if we haven’t done it before, we’re always willing to try something new!

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

As the owner of the studio, I handle most of the client-facing and business duties, which pretty much means I am constantly on email. One of the most important things to us is customer service. I love connecting with clients on this level and helping them navigate the whole process, which is usually a completely foreign experience to them. On the business side, I am constantly brainstorming to expand the brand and refine our processes, enhance our client experience, and just meet the day to day challenges of running a small business—fielding emails, meetings, and calls, connecting with planners and vendors, strategizing on marketing initiatives and and checking in to see how different projects are going.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

We all work together in an open plan studio, which I love because it promotes an incredible amount of collaboration, which is so key to this process. I find that this set up promotes efficiency as well as keeps everyone aware of the tasks at hand and the goals we need to meet.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

One of the more difficult things to manage in a busy studio is prioritizing tasks and keeping the wheels moving for all our clients at the same time. There are days when the to-do list is overwhelming, and it’s so important to see clearly what needs to be done first, second, and so on down the line. That’s why timelines are so important to us—we set a timeline for each client and make sure we do everything we can to stick with the dates and prioritize appropriately.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Our process typically starts with a call and/or client meeting, during which we really start drilling down into the client’s vision, and start sharing with them all of the possibilities. Once a plan is formulated, we begin the design process, during which we’re brainstorming and sketching out ideas, and presenting them in a series of proofs. There is a period of back and forth when we integrate changes, really listening to our client’s feedback, and hone everything to perfection.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Then we are signing off on the designs and sending them to print. Depending on the project, the next phase can actually be the most intense for us. This is when production begins, and we are spending on average one to five weeks (sometimes more!) actually producing the designs. With more elaborate projects, we may be getting supplies and finishing techniques done by 5-10 different artisans during this phase, which takes time and a lot of coordination to get right.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

In addition, some of the assembly that we do (liners, vintage stamps, calligraphy, wax seal ties, and even simply collating the right items into a particular guest’s envelope) take an enormous amount of time and precision to achieve.

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

Behind the Stationery: Fourteen Forty

In the end, it’s all worth it to reach our goal—a design that is new, special, and specific to each client. There is no better moment then when we present the finished suite after months of hard work, and see our client look at their dream invitation for the first time!
