Paper Party 2016: The Cocktails (and Recipes!)

In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that we offered two signature cocktails to guests at Paper Party 2016. In the past we’ve offered an open (cash) bar so that guests could order whatever they liked, but I’ve always wanted to do a custom cocktail menu – after all, it is kind of one of the things we do best around here! So we finally did it! Andrew came up with two recipes that we thought worked well for both the time of year and the number of guests (we were estimating around 250 people): a Pineapple Mai Tai and a Lavender Collins. They’re both so, so good and perfect for summer get togethers! Today we’re sharing the recipes for both drinks, along with the cocktail coasters, stir sticks, menus, and matchbox favors that we made for the Paper Party!

First, the stationery! Sarah from Parrott Design Studio designed the gorgeous cocktail menus – I printed them at home using my Epson WorkForce WF-7610 printer (which can print borderless!). I printed a smaller 5×7 size to scatter around the venue, and a larger 8×10 size to display at the bar.

We also worked with Foryourparty.com to make some fun wood cocktail stir sticks in shiny lavender foil, coasters in shiny lavender foil, and – my personal favorite – Riviera matchbox party favors with shiny silver foil on lavender Color Plan paper. I just can’t get enough lavender these days!

Okay, so I may have gone a bit coaster crazy for the party this year, but after seeing this absolutely AMAZING hologram foil called Micro Glitter at Bella Figura when selecting a foil for the Paper Party invitations, I asked if they’d be willing to print up some coasters for the party. Can you blame me? The Micro Glitter hologram foil is just ridiculously awesome. It reminds me of a disco ball! How could I resist?

Okay, now on to the cocktail recipes! I wanted one of the cocktails to be fruity and tropical, and the other cocktail to be effervescent and refreshing (especially after a long day at the Javits Center). A Pineapple Mai Tai and Lavender Collins were the perfect fit! I highly recommend giving both of these cocktails a spin at home!

Pineapple Mai Tai Cocktail Recipe / Oh So Beautiful Paper

Pineapple Mai Tai

1 oz Silver Rum
1 oz Aged Rum
1 oz Lime Juice
3/4 oz El Guapo Orgeat
1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
1/2 oz Orange Curaçao

Combine all the ingredients in a shaker filled two-thirds with ice and shake gently. Strain into a lowball glass filled with crushed ice and garnish with a mint bouquet. Enjoy!

One quick note about shaken drinks: If you’re making a large quantity of a shaken cocktail recipe in advance, chances are you won’t individually shake each cocktail in a cocktail shaker. But! Shaking a cocktail with ice adds water to a drink, so without it the drink can come out a bit on the strong side. When pre-mixing a large batch of cocktails in advance, you’ll need to add extra water to the recipe to compensate. We recommend adding about half an ounce of water per serving for these kinds of drinks.

Lavender-Lemon Collins Cocktail Recipe / Oh So Beautiful Paper

Lavender Collins

2 oz Dry Gin
1 oz Royal Rose Lavender-Lemon Syrup
3/4 oz Lemon Juice
Soda Water
Mint

Add mint and ice to a highball glass, then add the gin, lavender-lemon syrup, and lemon juice. Top with soda water and give it a good stir to combine. Enjoy!

A huge thanks to El Guapo Bitters and Royal Rose who so generously donated their syrups for the Paper Party so that we could make these wonderful cocktails!

Paper Party 2016! (aka Pastel Rainbow Iridescent Disco Party Inspiration)

As promised, I’m sharing the photos from this year’s Paper Party during the National Stationery Show! I can’t believe the party was already two weeks ago – the whole evening went by so fast! The iridescent disco vibes that helped shape the invitation design also helped guide the overall party design. We incorporated a pastel rainbow color palette – lavender, mint green, light blue, and shades of pink and peach – along with plenty of sparkle!

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace in the 2nd floor Salon. My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party and kept the entire evening running smoothly. Our amazing group of sponsors and creative partners helped us bring the party to life, including the National Stationery Show, Mixbook, Etsy Wholesale, My Mind’s Eye, Smock, Bella Figura, Sakura of America, Hester & Cook Design Group, Legion Paper, Mailchimp, Crow & Canary, Honeybook, Sugar Paper, Foryourparty.com, Soirée Floral, Meant to Be Calligraphy, Ashley Buzzy, Parabo Press, Sarah from Parrott Design Studio, and Smilebooth.

I printed the sponsor thank you banner on a 3′ x 4′ color engineer print from Parabo Press! Michele from Meant to Be Calligraphy provided the calligraphy lettering, which I combined with my own text and layered over the watercolor background from the invitations – then just printed the whole thing! Easy peasy. We decorated with our signature honeycomb clusters with mini disco balls! We also incorporated iridescent tassels made from fringe door curtains.

I also hand painted the Paper Party 2016 logo (designed by Ashley Buzzy) on a 3′ x 4′ engineer print from Parabo Press. The lettering is actually made of holographic silver glitter over glue. It didn’t photograph very well, but it looked really cool in person!

Can you seriously believe this paper fan wall?? It was definitely the highlight of the entire party. The team from My Mind’s Eye put the entire thing together – they even made the disco ball YOLO letters! Amazing.

I always like to have an interactive element at the party – and this year that activity involved Sakura of America pens! We asked our party guests to help us celebrate 70 years of the National Stationery Show by writing a little love note using Sakura of America Glaze, Gelly Roll, and Soufflé pens or Pen-touch paint markers. Janet from Fox and Fallow used silver Pen-touch markers to make a little sign to display amongst the colorful notes and pens. I loved the bright pop of color and seeing all the beautiful notes left by the party guests!

AND OMG THE FLOWERS. Dawn from Soirée Floral creates the most gorgeous arrangements for the Paper Party year after year. I really don’t know how she does it! This year I asked Dawn to create arrangements comprised mostly of greens – ferns, tropical leaves, vines, etc. – with just a few pink blooms tucked into each arrangement. For the blooms we used a mix of peonies, ranunculus, roses, and cymbidium orchids. They turned out even more beautifully than I could have possibly imagined!

Sarah from Parrott Design Studio was kind enough to design a cocktail menu for the party. I love her illustrations and hand lettered recipes!

Mixbook sponsored this year’s Paper Party photobooth – and they made a book with photos from past Paper Parties (aw, memories!) for guests to browse while waiting for their turn in the photobooth, along with a few other photo book examples and some of their gorgeous photo cards. So fun!

Paper Party 2015!

I’m so excited to FINALLY share the photos from this year’s Paper Party during the National Stationery Show! I can’t believe the party was almost two weeks ago already – the whole evening went by so fast! I shared the party invitations designed by Moglea and printed by Bella Figura a couple of weeks ago, and the invitations really helped guide the overall party design. This year’s party had a tropical vibe, with a color palette inspired by the party invitations – shades of pink, dark blue, and gold – and lots of tropical details from foliage to flamingos!

OSBP-Paper-Party-2015-Charlie-Juliet-Photography-73

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace – but this time in their rooftop terrace! My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party and kept the entire evening running smoothly and Mandy (one of our resident DIY mavens) helped with a lot of the party décor. We also partnered with an incredible team of sponsors and creative companies to bring the party to life, including The National Stationery Show, Minted, Etsy Wholesale, Silhouette America, Smock, Simply Framed, Rifle Paper Co., Hester & Cook Design Group, Legion Paper, Postable, Mailchimp, May Designs, Flower Muse, StationeryHQ, Foryourparty.com, and Swiss Cottage Designs.

Mandy made the most amazing sign for the Paper Party this year! She hand painted some white canvas fabric in our party colors then cut out the letters and backed them with gold fabric! We accented with lasercut tropical paper foliage and pineapples from Alexis Mattox Design. Our tables featured gorgeous table runners and placemats from the new Chilewich + Hester & Cook collaboration (so pretty!) and table confetti from Minted! Michele from Meant to Be Calligraphy also lettered our menu selections on Chilewich + Hester & Cook place cards.

Courtney from Swiss Cottage Designs offered to help out with some of the day-of stationery pieces – didn’t she do the most amazing job?? Courtney designed a fun tropical-inspired cocktail menu, name tags, cocktail stir sticks, coasters, matchboxes, and a giant welcome sign! For Your Party printed the coasters, matchboxes, and stir sticks in rose gold foil.

I had a blast making signs for the party! I used my favorite DIY technique for making spray painted acrylic signs – but instead of a paint pen I used my Silhouette CAMEO to cut out vinyl decals! Michele from Meant to Be Calligraphy and Jenna from Mon Voir kindly provided lettering, which I cut out in white and hot pink vinyl. The signs ranged in size from 5″ x 7″ to 18″ x 24″ and were seriously so easy to make!

OSBP-Paper-Party-2015-Charlie-Juliet-Photography-62

We also had a table with a demo of the Silhouettte CAMEO for party guests – we cut pineapples out of yellow and navy vinyl to wear as stickers around the party. They were such a hit! Mandy made a pineapple garland from navy card stock (so cute).

These cascading honeycombs probably made the biggest visual impact and were one of my favorite decorations at the party! We mixed 5″ honeycombs with crepe paper streamers and Mandy‘s DIY air plants. We had 4 or 5 of these cascades around the party. I love how they turned out!

This gallery wall in collaboration with Simply Framed was hands down my favorite element of the party! We mixed original calligraphy artwork from some of my favorite calligraphers with tropical-inspired illustrations, and I looooooove how it all came together! The prints all look amazing together and Simply Framed did a wonderful job matching each print to its perfect frame. Stay tuned for a little something special involving these prints tomorrow!

Can we talk about the AMAZING floral arrangements for a few minutes? Dawn from Soirée Floral absolutely killed it! We combined gorgeous peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, and greens from Flower Muse with a few tropical flowers like king protea and pink ginger flowers. We mixed a few large arrangements with smaller cocktail-size arrangements that guests could take home at the end of the evening. I’m still dreaming about these amazing blooms!

Paper Party 2014!

Each year, I have the immense privilege of hosting a party during the National Stationery Show – and today I’m so excited to share the photos from this year’s party! The stationery community is full of some of the most wonderful and talented people, many of whom I’m honored to consider friends, and it makes me indescribably happy to see all of them in the same (big) room together and having a great time. Such an incredible evening!

OSBP-Paper-Party-2014-Charlie-Juliet-Photography-28

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace. My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party and kept the entire evening running smoothly. We chose a floral theme for this year’s party, with a color palette of black, white, pink, and gold paired with shades of peach, mint, and other pastels. We also partnered with an incredible team of sponsors to bring the party to life: Minted, Mohawk, Etsy Wholesale, Smock, Hester & Cook Design Group, Postable, Mailchimp, Snow & Graham, Legion Paper, Gilah Press & Design, Ladies of Letterpress, Zazzle, and Balloon Time Helium Tanks.

OSBP-Paper-Party-2014-Charlie-Juliet-Photography-188

I wanted to find a way of thanking our amazing team of sponsors – without which this party would seriously not have been possible – and Minted was kind enough to print this large scale (8′ long!) welcome banner using a modified horizontal version of their Botanical Wreath photo backdrop. Alexis Mattox created a beautiful gold and cream botanical paper garland to string around the banner. So pretty!

The first 125 party guests received tote gift bags provided by Zazzle and designed by Mr. Boddington’s Studio – and packed to the brim with AMAZING stationery goodies. All 125 gift bags disappeared in less than 15 minutes! But you guys are in luck: I set aside five tote bags just to give away to a few lucky readers. Check back tomorrow for the giveaway!

It has become a bit of a tradition for us to have a large decoration spelling out “Paper Party” near the venue entrance. Ashley from Fine Day Press created the letters and giant paper flowers using Mohawk Britehue, Opaque, and Strathmore paper and Smock gift wrap, with assembly help from Barbara of Double Bravo. The botanical garland was made by Alexis Mattox Design. I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out!

Last year’s folded paper shadowbox decorations were a big hit, so I knew I wanted to do something creative again this year! Once again, we partnered with Minted to bring Smilebooth to the Paper Party – and I still can’t get over this amazing backdrop! We used a pink version of their Botanical Wreath backdrop paired with pink, peach, and white tissue paper fans and custom paper flowers commissioned from artist David Holland (aka Old City Artmaker). So gorgeous!

The Smilebooth photos are some of my favorite from the entire party! It makes me so happy to see some of my favorite people having fun together – even with babies and toddlers in tow!

Inspired By: Rose Gold

Since we’re already on the subject of beautiful metallic foil today, I couldn’t help but think of my current favorite metallic hue: rose gold! Don’t get me wrong, I still love gold, silver, and copper, but there’s something so soft and romantic about rose gold. I just can’t get enough, from jewelry to stationery to utensils. I’m looking forward to seeing lots, lots more beautiful rose gold over the coming months!
