About Founder + Editor Nole Garey

Hi everyone! I’m Nole Garey, and I like to say that I’m a recovering diplomat turned full time creative blogger. I previously worked in international diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State from 2003 – 2010 before leaving to pursue Oh So Beautiful Paper full time. I hold a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Central Florida and an M.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University (where I met my husband Andrew), but I’ve been passionate about design and all things paper my entire life.

I fell in love with the world of wedding invitations and stationery while planning my May 2008 Washington, DC wedding and started Oh So Beautiful Paper in large part to help connect other engaged couples with talented designers. Andrew and I welcomed our first daughter Sophie (you can see her awesome birth announcements here) in 2012 and our second daughter Alice (you can see her beautiful birth announcements here) in 2014. We currently live in Washington DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood with several adorable cats.

Our Philosophy

At Oh So Beautiful Paper, we believe that stationery is an extension of your personal style. It’s a nice and all too rare treat to come home to a handwritten letter or card. We believe sending paper – taking the time to buy, write, and send a card – has enormous interpersonal value. Sending handwritten mail has become a signifier: a mark of the importance and value that the sender places on the relationship with the recipient.

We believe stationery has a role to play in a beautiful lifestyle. Our goal is to help you find paper products that represent you and your personality, whether you live in DC or California or Australia, while also helping to support local businesses, small businesses, and eco-friendly businesses. It might not seem so at first glance, but stationery supports all of these goals. We’re not focused on the mass market, but on stationery that is unique and different, just like you and me.

Best of 2017: My Favorite Projects!

Today I’m wrapping up our 2017 recap with a look back at some of my personal favorite posts from 2017! We’ve already covered fun DIY projects, favorite cocktails, sweet baby shower invitations and birth announcements, playful and colorful wedding invitations, and romantic and understated wedding invitations – all of which I absolutely love – but the posts below are a bit more personal in nature. I’m planning to write a bit more about my goals for 2018 next week, but one of those goals is to share more personal content, from conversations about motherhood and family to sharing more behind-the-scenes peeks to exploring more of DC. I used to share way more personal content, before Instagram became the thing it is today and before I had two kids (I honestly have no idea how any of you with 3+ kids manage to stay sane!), and I really miss it! I’ll also be doing a reader survey next week, but if there’s anything in particular that you’d like to see from me this year, please let me know in the comments!

One of my goals for 2017 was to get myself in front of the camera more often, which is DEFINITELY stepping outside of my comfort zone since I’m used to being the one behind the camera. But at the end of the day, it’s just me behind this mighty little blog, and it’s important to show my face more often. I teamed up with photographer Anna Meyer to visit some colorful walls in DC, and I can’t wait to do another installment in 2018!

2017 was a fairly big and transformative year – I celebrated my 9th blogging anniversary and introduced you to Common Room Studio! So far I’ve shared the design inspiration for Common Room Studio and we hosted our first set of workshops, but I still need to do a full reveal! Stay tuned in 2018. Oh, and if you’re in the DC area, you can sign up for our newsletter right here

On the home front, we shared our backyard makeover and talked about kitchen renovation inspiration! These days, my back yard looks more like a winter wasteland since everything has died back from the freezing temperatures, but I can’t wait until it looks like this again in the spring and summer! Oh, and we may have kickstarted our long-awaited kitchen renovation over the holiday break, so stay tuned for an update on that, too.

Best of 2017: Adorable Baby Announcements and Shower Invitations

Aaaah, babies! Even before I became a mom, I loved seeing festive and exuberant baby shower invitations, sweet birth announcements, and even fun birthday party invitations! Let’s take a look back at some of our favorite adorable baby announcements and shower invitations (and one first birthday party invitation!) from the year, from copper foil baby shower invitations to vellum first birthday party invitations!

Copper Foil Star Inspired Baby Shower Invitations by Bourne Paper Co.

Alana of Bourne Paper Co. sent two adorable baby stationery projects in 2017 – first, the invitations for her baby shower! The copper foil stars are the perfect complement to the crisp and clean modern design!

Vellum was one of the biggest trends of 2017 – and I’m expecting we’ll continue to see more of this translucent material in 2018! How lovely is this eucalyptus overlay on these first birthday party invitations from Mint for Hue??

Sweet and Simple Calligraphy Baby Announcements

Alright, prepare yourself for some seriously sweet baby announcements! We’re loving the combination of a colorful patterned envelope liner and a unique paper size from Alana of Bourne Paper Co.’s â€“ she made these sweet and simple calligraphy baby announcements for her daughter Peyton! This is truly a gorgeous welcome into the world, with custom calligraphy from Anne Robin and a patterned envelope liner inspired by textiles in Peyton’s nursery.

From Alana: To celebrate the birth of our daughter, Peyton, I wanted to design a birth announcement that was simple and sweet with some subtle sentimental touches. Peyton’s nursery is decorated in a color palette of bright pinks and soft blues including several Hmong and mudcloth patterned pillows. I decided I wanted her birth announcement to be a complement to her nursery – modern and clean but with some bright and colorful accents.

The announcement card focused on one of our favorite newborn photos of Peyton taken by The DeJaureguis photography team. I also incorporated hand lettering by Anne Robin. The DeJaureguis team photographed our wedding and Anne did the calligraphy for our save the dates and wedding invitations. Getting to incorporate both of their work into our daughter’s birth announcement felt like a very special and personal touch.

The announcement text was letterpress printed in black ink (as you can tell from our save the dates, I’m a sucker for classic black and white letterpress). I used Crane Lettra in Fluorescent White. I love the textural feel and the way it makes the impression of letterpress stand out.

To add a pop of color, I created a bright blue and pink envelope liner featuring a Hmong-inspired pattern. I also incorporated a hint of the pattern into the address labels. The announcement was finished with a light kraft envelope, a nod to the weathered oak wood of her nursery furniture.

On a personal note, when I was born my paternal grandmother (a talented painter and calligrapher) created my birth announcements. Both of my grandmothers were creative spirits who fostered that same sense of creativity in me. Getting to create my daughter’s birth announcements felt like a fitting tribute to these two wonderful women. I look forward to sharing their stories with my daughter one day.
